Youth Life Foundation of Richmond is a non-profit that provides quality after-school tutoring and academic intervention for students from Richmond's most under-resourced neighborhoods. Each spring, we invite our amazing volunteer tutors to extend their own invitations to friends and family and help us raise funds for our summer programs.

Although many of our after-school tutoring volunteers go home or pause their volunteering over the summer months, this fundraiser is a chance for them to continue to serve the students they've built relationship with throughout the year. By donating, you help ensure that these students continue to receive quality, safe, encouraging care throughout the summer months, until our volunteer tutors can return for the next school year! Why Summer Programming?

Summer learning loss is a threat to students if they do not stay academically engaged during the annual three-month break from school. For low-income students, research shows that the “summer slide” is more significant than for their high-income counterparts. Cumulative learning loss over summers has negative long-term implications for the ever-widening achievement gap between these populations as well, according to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA). The good news is, summer learning programs targeted to low-income students have shown to not only combat summer learning loss, but lead to gains, helping to close the opportunity and achievement gaps.

The summer months are a vital time in the academic and social development of our youth, especially as our students continue to recover from pandemic learning loss. For 21 years, Youth Life Foundation of Richmond has offered high-quality programming for low-income elementary students in communities with high poverty concentration. By prioritizing literacy and math instruction along with enrichment activities for six weeks, our students will spend their summer progressing academically in a familiar, positive, and FUN setting.
