Progress and the Next Phase

Over the past year, the In/Visibility Lab Data Sonification project has moved from concept into active development.

Built from the growing Archive of Invisible Things—stories shared with remarkable honesty and trust—this project explores how lived experiences of invisibility can be translated into sound and visual form, allowing them to be felt, not just understood.

Thanks to early support from individual donors and foundations, I’ve been able to deepen the research, clarify the ethical and conceptual framework guiding the work, and begin testing approaches to sonifying the data. What began as a complex, layered idea is now a developing body of work with a clear direction.

The next phase focuses on advancing the technical and creative development and preparing the project for broader public presentation. This stage requires sustained time, collaboration, and resources to be carried forward with integrity and care.

Sounding the Archive

Overview
What does experiencing invisibility look like, sound like, feel like? We’re about to find out.

The In/Visibility Lab Data Sonification Project is a groundbreaking initiative that transforms psychosocial data—gathered from over 500 participants worldwide—into an immersive, 23-part musical composition. By blending art, science, and technology, multidisciplinary artist Gabrielle Senza is transforming personal stories from her Archive of Invisible Things into a powerful, multisensory audio-visual experience. This project stems from Gabrielle's own experiences of growing up feeling invisible to those who were meant to protect her, while wishing to disappear from the nefarious individuals in her life. Through this process, the data uncovers profound insights into the universal human experience of invisibility, connection, and belonging.

The Project: Transforming Data into Music

At the core of this project is data sonification, a process where Gabrielle Senza identifies the emotions behind each participant’s survey responses, assigns them emotional frequency values, and translates these into musical notes, sounds, and rhythms. Drawing from over 11,500 data points collected through the Archive of Invisible Things, participants shared deeply personal insights in response to questions such as:

When have you felt invisible?
Where do you feel most comfortable?
What is your most pressing concern?
What invisible things do you rely on everyday?

These emotional frequencies are now being transformed into a unique musical score, offering a way to hear the stories of invisibility in a form that transcends words.

The final composition will be presented through multimedia performances that integrate spoken word, movement, and video, along with immersive gallery installations—creating a powerful, multisensory experience that reveals the unseen layers of our shared humanity.

Invisibility is not just a metaphor—it’s a reality for many people who feel overlooked, marginalized, or unseen. By turning these experiences into sound, the Data Sonification Project creates a space where people can feel heard, seen, and understood. This project invites all of us to engage with the emotional landscapes of invisibility in a way that fosters empathy, understanding, and connection.

Gabrielle firmly believes that sounding the archive, amplifying unheard voices, and making the invisible visible through interactive arts-based experiences, are valuable keys to creating a culture of compassion and a more inclusive world where everyone matters.

Gabrielle Senza, Founder & Artistic Director
Gabrielle Senza is an artist, musician, educator, and empowerment coach deeply committed to building healthier, more inclusive communities that uplift and amplify the voices of marginalized people. Her civically-engaged art practice addresses social and environmental injustice. Partnering with museums, galleries, schools and organizations, Gabrielle has presented artwork, lectures, classes, and performances at events and venues around the world. Some of these include Vagina Monologue/VDay events, Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA-NY, Cooper Union, Bard College at Simon’s Rock, the Puffin Foundation, and ZK/U-Berlin – the Center for Art & Urbanistics.
