Our Story: "My Name Is"

A name is often the first gift we are given.
It embodies identity, culture, family, and a sense of belonging.

Yet for many children—and adults—names are also where teasing, exclusion, and bullying begin.

My Name Is is a powerful, community-wide musical initiative created by the School of American Music to celebrate identity, promote kindness, and bring people together through the shared experience of music.

Inspired by composer David Lang’s Crowd Out, this project invites participants of all ages—students, parents, choirs, musicians, civic groups, and neighbors—to take part in a joyful, inclusive performance that begins with something deeply personal: each person’s name.

Through music, movement, and collective voice, My Name Is transforms names into moments of pride, respect, and connection.

How It Began

The program was successfully piloted at Springfield Elementary in Michigan City, where students engaged deeply through music and movement. What began as a simple concept quickly became something much bigger—students stood taller, listened more closely to one another, and felt seen.

Now, the School of American Music is expanding "My Name Is" into a large-scale community event, bringing together:

Local schools
Youth and adult choirs
Community organizations
Professional and student musicians
Families and neighbors

The result will be a vibrant, celebratory performance that moves through the community - uplifting, participatory, and welcoming to all.
