About Brown Kids Read:

Brown Kids Read was founded in 2018 by Ssanyu Lukoma when she was just 13 years old. Now a student at Howard University, Ssanyu is still committed to addressing the literacy crisis in America and making a lasting impact on the next generation of readers.

Brown Kids Read is a nonprofit organization on a mission to distribute as many free, diverse children's books as possible, ensuring every child feels represented and inspired by the stories they read. With over 11,000 books distributed to date, the organization is working toward an ambitious goal of giving away 20,000 books in 2025 to children in underserved communities.

At the heart of Brown Kids Read is its belief in empowering teens as social impact leaders. Through initiatives like the Impact Institute, teens are trained to lead fundraising campaigns, organize book distributions, and directly engage their communities to get the work done.

By combining leadership development with a focus on literacy, Brown Kids Read is building a movement that not only puts books into the hands of kids who need them most but also inspires the next generation of changemakers.
