Thousands of children in Afghanistan suffer from hydrocephalus and spina bifida, yet access to care is extremely limited. Without treatment, 50% won’t survive past age two, and survivors often endure severe developmental and cognitive impairments. In Afghanistan, there is just 1 neurosurgeon for every 500,000 people—compared to 1 for every 10,000 in the U.S., a ratio 50 times more severe.
