Access Oasis is a community garden with a uniquely inclusive mission—one that centers the disabled experience, so that all our neighbors can grow together in a world becoming less accessible to everyone, disabled or not. We need our community’s help to make our efforts sustainable beyond this summer.

Since Fall 2023, volunteers have been hard at work successfully turning a paved lot in Astoria, Queens into a beautiful oasis filled with flowers and greenery, and creating opportunities for community connection through gardening and art.

Why support Access Oasis?

Gardening has been proven to reduce stress and improve mood, in addition to supporting our natural environment. Unfortunately, too many people with disabilities can’t access traditional community gardens because of a wide variety of barriers, physical and otherwise. That unintentional exclusion is a lose-lose for both the individual and the community that would be more vibrant with their contributions.

Access Oasis proactively builds accessibility into everything that we do, while remaining responsive to individual needs within the incredibly diverse disability community. Members of our 100% volunteer organizing team know from personal experience how accommodations for our disabilities open up a world of possibilities and lead to life-changing experiences, both for disabled people and their neighbors.

What we've accomplished with supporters’ help:

Installing raised garden beds in varying heights, including wheelchair accessible beds.
Planting hundreds of perennial flowers and bulbs across ground and raised beds.
Acquiring inclusive seating options, including a custom wheelchair accessible picnic table from Astoria Woodworkers Collective.
Securing a garden shed to house our growing collection of adaptive gardening tools, which accommodate for low grip, inability to bend, and more.
Collecting and distributing seeds from native plants that support pollinator activity and boost our local ecosystem.
Engaging hundreds of community members through open gardening hours, arts programming, mutual aid collaborations, and more.

Now in our second growing season, Access Oasis is asking for your help to maximize the impact of our inclusive gardening and community programming.

With your support we can:

Create opportunities for community learning around gardening, disability history, nature-based crafts, environmental topics, and more.
Provide accessible rides to Access Oasis for disabled community members.
Plant and maintain the perennial flowers and greenery in our space, previously known to neighbors as a place where trash was illegally dumped.
Cover costs of operation and outreach, ensuring Access Oasis will be there for our community members not just this year, but next year too.
