This year AOM enters its 2nd DECADE with SEASON 11.

Last year we launched the start of a 2-year celebration of our 1st decade. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us last spring for the premiere of Dig and our benefit performance Fête10, a live retrospective that brought emeritus company members together from every season of our first 10 years.

This 10th anniversary season we celebrate that history and move confidently into our 2nd DECADE! We hope you will join in supporting the company as it hits this milestone.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Acts of Matter is more than a performance group. It is an ideology. A belief in the ability of movement to move people—to stir in them something innately human: the need to find connection. Acts of Matter was founded out of a desire to bring a collective of artists together to make work that fosters these bonds: between artists and audiences, between the subconscious and the conscious parts of our selves. It has grown to be a research platform on stage and off where artists can foster deep listening and connect with other curious movers and thinkers. As we enter our second decade of work together, I am humbled by what we’ve created. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our collective evolution.

The company's name acknowledges the inherent capacity of the body, of matter, to express deep truths of our lived experience, truths that matter deeply to our collective humanity.

SEASON 11 PREMIERE

We are so excited to be getting into the studio for our newest premiere. This year we are ecstatic to welcome back 3 dancers who have previously worked with the company--Colleen Hendricks, Natalie Allen, and Kaelie Osorio--and bring a 4th dancer--Arletta Anderson--into the family!

We are just getting started on creating a new work loosely based on the concepts of discovery, innovation, and renewal.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

This year also marks the 10th offering of Focused Study, a workshop grounded in the values and the mission of Acts of Matter: to bring diverse people together to enhance each others’ experience in life and in dance through sharing, listening, and learning. After launching during the height of the pandemic in June 2020, Focused Study has become a linchpin of the company, bringing in facilitators from diverse backgrounds and expertise to engage participants in opportunities for self-exploration, expression, connection, and development. We have also been bringing in somatic bodyworkers who specialize in Massage, Gyrokinesis, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, and Ilan Lev Method.

A primary goal of these workshops is to provide access to those who might not have the financial resources to carve out the time and space in their day-to-day lives to take this kind of care for themselves. Because of this, roughly 50% of all participants receive some kind of aid or full scholarship to attend.
