Ivelisse - A Journey of Compassion

For Ivelisse, helping others is not just a profession—it’s a purpose woven into the fabric of her life. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she moved to Allentown, PA, as a teenager, where she found both challenges and opportunities in a new community. At 16, Ivelisse was pregnant and in her third trimester with no access to maternity care. Her mother, who did not speak English, struggled to navigate the healthcare system, and fear loomed over the unknowns of impending motherhood.

It was at Valley Health Partners (VHP) Community Health Center's Center for Women’s Medicine that she found hope. A compassionate staff member, Damarie Lugo, extended a guiding hand, ensuring that Ivelisse received the care she and her baby desperately needed. Damarie, a beloved advocate for women’s health, left a lasting impact on the community—a legacy that VHP honored by renaming the Baby Store in her name. After her son was born, he continued to receive care at the VHP Children’s Clinic, deepening Ivelisse’s personal connection to the organization.

The Lehigh Valley has been Ivelisse's home for 27 years, and her journey has now come full circle. In 2022, she joined VHP, an organization that once provided her with care in her most vulnerable moment, now allowing her to give back to others with the same compassion and respect she once received. Having walked in the footsteps of many VHP patients, Ivelisse intimately understands the barriers to healthcare that so many in her community face. Now, as a member of the VHP team, she upholds the organization’s values of excellence and connectedness, ensuring that every patient feels seen, heard, and cared for.

“Being on both the patient and the VHP side has allowed me to really appreciate how much VHP has to offer,” she reflects. Her experiences fuel her commitment to creating a place where people receive more than just treatment—they receive dignity and hope.

About VHP's Center for Women's Medicine

VHP's Center for Women’s Medicine (CWM) provides comprehensive health care for women and adolescent girls, including specialists who help with high-risk pregnancies, depression, nutrition and more. If patients have difficulty getting to appointments, transportation is available. We offer obstetrics and gynecology, regardless of whether a person has health insurance or can pay for care. The practice offers care by specialists who are educated to treat high-risk pregnant women in one convenient location. For women who are not pregnant, VHP Center for Women’s Medicine provides women’s well visits. We also provide multi-language interpreter services, with two full-time Spanish interpreters who work in the clinic.

Valley Health Partners (VHP) Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike, and an IRS-recognized and incorporated 501(c)3 based in Allentown, Easton, and the Poconos, in Pennsylvania. Founded in 2020, VHP offers comprehensive health care for people of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay.
