Just $1.50. That’s all it will take from every United Methodist in South Carolina to ensure the Advocate newspaper continues to stay strong and flourish in the new reality of this denomination.

This is a critical time in the life of The United Methodist Church, especially here in South Carolina. And now more than ever, the Advocate is needed to help tell the story and share the good news. The Advocate remains the primary source of news about the UMC in South Carolina, and our work continues as strong as ever. With redesigned digital and print publications and a brand-new website chock-full of inspiring and helpful information, the Advocate is rolling out a bevy of exciting new features. Not only that, but our book publishing endeavor, the Advocate Press, is soaring. We have nearly 40 titles since our founding in late 2017.

Founded in 1836 with our first edition in 1837, the Advocate has seen this state through everything from the Civil War to Reconstruction to the civil rights movement to the schism over sexuality issues. An independent newspaper published by a board of trustees and a staff of three, the Advocate long enjoyed a handsome allocation from the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. But with the loss of 25 percent of this state’s UMC churches since 2023, those funds are dwindling. Today, the conference’s support covers less than 15 percent of our operating budget. The rest comes from subscriptions, ads, book sales and donations from businesses and from individual readers like you.
