After the 1994 genocide, where nearly one million people were killed by neighbors, classmates, and even friends, the people of Rwanda made a choice that most of us cannot fathom: they chose forgiveness.

They chose to rebuild not just their homes and institutions, but their relationships, their communities, and their country. Survivors and perpetrators now work side by side in the fields, not out of convenience, but out of commitment to the next generation. A generation that deserves a future free from resentment, hatred, and division. But reconciliation alone doesn’t feed a family.

That’s where The Coffee Farm come in.

The Problem: In Rwanda, 864 smallholder farmers grow some of the world’s best coffee, but they often earn just pennies for their work. Without fair markets or steady income, families struggle to pay for school fees, healthcare, and basic needs. Decades after the genocide, communities are still working to rebuild, and financial insecurity can threaten that fragile peace.

Why Aegis Trust: For over 20 years, Aegis Trust has been a global leader in genocide prevention and peace building. It operates the Kigali Genocide Memorial, leads Rwanda’s national peace education program (reaching over 4 million people), and has helped embed peace education into the country’s school curriculum. Aegis is trusted by governments, philanthropists, and grassroots communities alike, and its impact includes training tens of thousands of teachers, empowering survivors, and developing social enterprises that create lasting livelihoods

How Will the Impact of Your Dollars Help: Your gift launches The Coffee Farm, our first self-sustaining café in Nottingham, U.K.

We are building a closed-loop social enterprise:

864 smallholder farmers grow specialty-grade (86-scored) coffee beans.
Farmers receive above-market prices and share in café profits. The money helps them pay for food, medical expenses, school fees, insurance, continuing education, and invest in livestock to have year round income outside the coffee season.
Revenues are reinvested into peace education, trauma healing, and sustainable livelihoods through the Aegis Trust.
Covers the pilot café’s build-out, farmer partnerships, and brand development making this project self-sustaining, not donor-dependent.

The first café will open in Nottingham, England, in 2025. This flagship will prove the model and become a hub for awareness and storytelling.
