Once upon a time, there was a man named Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), one of the closest companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Umar was known for his deep faith, generosity, and commitment to Islam. He was always ready to give his wealth in the way of Allah, believing that every act of charity brought him closer to Jannah (Paradise). One day, Umar (RA) was inspired by the Prophet (PBUH) to give charity to support those in need. It was during a time when a great need arose in Medina, and the companions were asked to help. Umar (RA), wanting to do his best for Allah, decided to give a large portion of his wealth. However, he thought to himself, “I will give half of my wealth today,” and set off to find the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to offer his donation. As Umar (RA) made his way, he saw Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA), the first caliph, walking toward the Prophet (PBUH) with his own donation. Curious, Umar (RA) asked, “O Abu Bakr, what have you brought for the Prophet?” Abu Bakr (RA) smiled and replied, “I have brought everything that I have, for Allah has commanded me to give in His way.” Umar (RA) was inspired by Abu Bakr’s sacrifice, and feeling the desire to give more than he had initially planned, he rushed to the Prophet (PBUH). When he arrived, he proudly presented half of his wealth, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, I have brought half of my wealth as charity for the poor and the needy.” The Prophet (PBUH) looked at him with a smile and said, “What did you leave behind for your family, Umar?” Umar (RA) replied, “I have left the other half for my family, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet (PBUH) nodded in approval, as he saw that Umar (RA) had given selflessly and also ensured the needs of his own family were met. But then, as Umar (RA) was leaving, he saw Abu Bakr (RA) again. Abu Bakr (RA) had not only given half of his wealth like Umar (RA), but he had given everything he owned in charity. Umar (RA) turned to Abu Bakr (RA) and said, “O Abu Bakr, what have you left for your family?” Abu Bakr (RA) replied, “I have left Allah and His Messenger for my family.” This story teaches us the importance of charity and the selfless dedication of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH). They gave not because they had excess, but because they understood that charity is a way to purify the soul and gain closeness to Allah.
