Align With Purpose Community
I’m a little bit hippy, undeniably queer, Black till I die, and a parent of two. I was raised in a family that is both notoriously hood and notoriously loving. At the heart of it all was my Gramma Dorothy. She brought our family and friends together with such consistency and care that it shaped my worldview entirely. She created a space where people knew they belonged. Where you could count on a hot meal, a talking to by an auntie, or a loving confrontation when you messed up. In that space, you could fall apart and still be held.
In queer community, we do our best to create those spaces for ourselves. We tend to each other, make room for our truths, and do the beautiful work of cultivating belonging. We also hold each other as we untangle from the toxic patterns passed down through our bloodlines. But often, what’s missing is the intergenerational richness that traditional families can offer. Babies running around, elders giving side-eye or belly laughs, generations in dialogue with each other.
Creating spaces like that isn’t easy. It takes deep internal capacity and material resources to stay rooted in care amidst the pressures of individualism, capitalism, and colonial systems. Inspired by my grandmother's legacy, I created Align with Purpose as a vehicle to carry her loving spirit forward in a way that reflects my own truth. It is a space where Black and queer experiences, magic, and resilience are centered and honored.
Align with Purpose is a social and healing justice project that bridges my work in trauma recovery with years of grassroots community-building. It is deeply shaped by my mentorship with powerful leaders such as Beverly Grant of Mo’ Betta Green, Dr. Rachel Harding of the Veterans of Hope Project, and Lakshmi Nair of Satya Yoga Cooperative. Our work unfolds from WOMBhouse, our co-owned community home in the East Colfax neighborhood, in collaboration with BIPOC artists, healers, and activists who are embedded in their own communities.
We offer trauma healing support through modalities like yoga, sound healing, acu-detox, grief and rage ceremonies, and identity-based support groups. We also host intergenerational gatherings designed to nourish joy, connection, spiritual practice, culturally-rooted care, and mutual aid.
This work is an offering. A weaving of lineage, community, and future vision. It’s a call back to the kitchens, porches, and circles where we are reminded that we belong to each other, to our joy, and to something much bigger than survival. Through Align with Purpose, I am honoring my grandmother’s legacy and planting seeds for a world where our wholeness is the standard.
As we continue to grow, we’re raising funds to convert our garage into a fully accessible space that reflects our values of inclusion and care. This renovation will include the construction of an ADA-compliant bathroom to ensure our space is welcoming to people with disabilities and our elders. The updated space will also offer more room for community members to gather, lounge, and connect, as well as host group classes, workshops, and ceremonies. This transformation is not just about infrastructure, it’s about deepening our capacity to hold more people, more healing, and more joy. We invite you to be part of making this expansion possible.
With love,
Sarah Naomi
