The Alliance To Mobilize Our Resistance (AMOR) is fundraising for Ana and her family, an indigenous family from Guatemala living in Providence. Ana gave birth in January, when to their shock, the baby and her two year old son were taken away because they live in a basement apartment. They need our support, in order to be reunited with their children as soon as possible. They need to be able to afford the higher cost of a two bedroom apartment.

Ana and her husband have been living and working here in Providence for the past few years. Ana only speaks K'iche' and a little Spanish, and her husband only speaks K'iche'. They were not aware of the strict rules about the type of housing they must legally occupy until it was too late. In January Ana gave birth to her daughter. When the nurses found out that she was not living in an apartment they called DCYF and then DCYF did a home inspection and as a result they were not allowed to take their newborn home and to make matters worse DCYF also took away her two year old child. AMOR is collaborating with the social worker to support Ana and her husband to comply with the legal requirements so that they can get their children back as soon as possible.

We are raising $5,000 to help Ana and her husband pay for the additional cost of a multi-bedroom unit for the next few months. If we can raise the full amount it will help us support them in adjusting their budget over the period of a year, so that they are able to pay this more expensive rent while they continue to get established to be able to pay it on their own. In order to comply with the social worker's rules they need a two-bedroom apartment. According to the social worker, the children are not allowed to sleep in the parents' room after reaching 11 months old.

If you know of any two bedroom apartments where this family would be welcome, please contact us at info@amorri.org ! We have not yet identified an apartment suitable to their needs because of the high cost of apartments today and also because of the requirements they ask for when renting an apartment.

Este día de la madre ¡ayuda a una madre a reunirse con sus niños!

La Alianza Para Movilizar Nuestra Resistencia (AMOR) estamos haciendo una recaudación de fondos para Ana y su familia, una familia indígena de Guatemala viviendo en Providence. Ana dio a luz en enero y desafortunadamente le quitaron la bebé y su otro niño de dos años por vivir en un sótano. Para estar reunidos en familia con sus niños, necesitan nuestra ayuda para poder pagar el alquiler de un apartamento de dos dormitorios de inmediato.

Ana y su marido han estado viviendo y trabajando aquí en Providence por los últimos años. Ana solo habla K’iche’ y un poquito de Español, y su esposo solo habla K’iche’. No se enteraron de las reglas estrictas sobre el tipo de viviendas que legalmente deben ocupar hasta que ya era demasiado tarde. En el mes de enero Ana dio a luz a una hija y no pudieron llevarla a su hogar porque vivían en un sótano. Cuando los enfermeras se enteraron de que no vivía en un apartamento llamaron a DCYF y luego ellos hicieron una inspección de su hogar y como resultado no dejaron a la familia llevar la recién nacida a su hogar y para empeorar la situación también le quitaron a su niño de dos años. Estamos colaborando con la trabajadora social para apoyar a Ana y su esposo a cumplir con los requisitos para que se pueda recuperar a sus hijos lo más pronto posible.

Estamos recaudando $5,000 para apoyar a Ana y su esposo a poder pagar el aumento del alquiler en los meses que vienen. Si podemos recaudar la cantidad total nos ayudará a apoyarles a ajustar su presupuesto durante el periodo de un año para poder pagar este alquiler más caro que su presupuesto mientras se sigan estableciendo y poder pagarlo por su propia cuenta. Para poder cumplir con las reglas del trabajador social necesitan un apartamento de dos cuartos. Según la trabajadora social, los niños no pueden dormir en la misma cuarto que sus padres a partir de los 11 meses.

Todavía no hemos identificado un apartamento adecuado a su necesidad por el alto costo de los apartamentos en la actualidad y también por los requisitos que piden al rentar un apartamento.

The AMOR Alliance was formed in 2017 and is made up of five grassroots organizations: Providence Youth Student Movement, Direct Action for Rights & Equality, The FANG Collective, Colectivo Sin Fronteras and Ocean State Advocacy.

The AMOR Support Line (401-675-1414) launched on Valentine’s Day 2018, organizes community led actions and support in response to immigration abuse, police brutality and hate crimes.

When someone calls the support line we coordinate an appropriate response which can be in the form of legal support, mental health support, community response(s), as well as transportation and/or interpretation.
