A note from the director

I am so humbled to announce that despite the completely unforeseen shift that SEASON 11 has taken, we are ready to bring new work to you in the form of reframe: an evening of community, reflection, and celebration.

After the devastating loss of my home and community in Altadena from the Eaton fire, I wasn't sure how to move forward with the plans for the company. But with time, patience, and so much generosity from my dancers and this entire community, I feel excited and ready to share some of our work, new and old. I feel even more called than usual to be in community—in support of and in receipt of the life affirming energy that we create together.

In this new year, in this new season—this new DECADE—for Acts of Matter, I had been contemplating the promise and potential of new beginnings. The joy and simultaneous uncertainty of entering the unknown. I had no idea how prescient those explorations were. But here we are. Here I am. Navigating an unexpected reality. Reflecting on the past, curious about the future. embracing the potential of the unknown. moving Forward, Looking Back once again. Reframing what is and what can be and what might have been into what we choose to make of it.

So we are revisiting the past and stepping into the future.

This show will be part nostalgia as we take a look back at the film Forward Looking Back—the project that brought Acts of Matter out of the pandemic. Dancers from every iteration of the company reunited in my newly purchased first home to create a reflective work about coming together again, of navigating a home space in community after having been isolated for so long. We dance through it, around it, on top of it.

The show will also be a step into this new future, showcasing a work in progress of the material we had been exploring prior to the fire. See it in its raw state, with minimal production and maximum curiousity of what it could become. Featuring amazing performing collaborators Natalie Allen, Arletta Anderson, Colleen Hendricks, and Kaelie Osorio.

Then there will be a short discussion with Rebecca Lemme, facilitated by dear friend and (too-infrequent) collaborator Kevin Williamson.

We will start and end, as we always do, with community, music, an open dance floor and an assortment of beverages to go around.

The evening is donation based and all proceeds go to support the artists, the company, and (humbly) me to help ensure I can rebuild my home and community space for future events and sharings and memories and LIFE.

Acts of Matter is more than a performance group. It is an ideology. A belief in the ability of movement to move people—to stir in them something innately human: the need to find connection. Acts of Matter was founded out of a desire to bring a collective of artists together to make work that fosters connection: between artists and audiences, between the subconscious and the conscious parts of our selves. It has grown to be a research platform on stage and off where artists can foster deep listening and connect with other curious movers and thinkers. As we step into this 2nd decade of work together, I am humbled by what we’ve created. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our collective evolution.
