Meet Lizet:

Lizet received a $1000 scholarship from Athena's Warehouse to help her pursue her dreams and become the first in her family to go to college. She enrolled at Georgia State University and began her coursework in August 2022.

Lizet was excited to join the Discover Your Inner Warrior program offered by Athena’s Warehouse since she heard about it during her freshman year at Cross Keys high school. Recently when reflecting on her experience with Athena’s Warehouse, Lizet had this to say:

“The workshops provided by Athena’s have helped me in many ways. I don't talk about my past struggles as much but I'm glad to say that I no longer go through depression like I did before but my PTSD is still here, just not as present and I'm glad because of Athena's Warehouse. Before anything I want to thank Athena's Warehouse because if it weren't for them and their amazing partners that would come to the workshops, I'm pretty sure I would still be struggling to this point. So to answer the question, how has the workshops helped me with my difficulties in my life is that I managed to have less stress. I took so many pieces from different workshops and a few of them are that I was able to learn about SMART goals that would save me from having stress. I was able to have a schedule so that I'm not all over the place.”

Since our founding in 2009, Athena's Warehouse has always provided annual scholarships to students regardless of "resume buffers." We grant scholarships to our ladies who show up for themselves! The ladies who ask questions, are engaged with our programs and who aren't afraid to ask for help and grow.

Will you stand with young women and ensure financial support for students who are often overlooked by their own school guidance counselors?

About our participants: Our typical participant is a first generation citizen or an immigrant herself. It is not uncommon that the highest level of education for her parents is elementary school. She typically works and/or helps with family care, has no car and relies on public transit, and she wants to go to college but has barriers related to citizenship and economic accessibility. It is also not uncommon that she suffers from trauma including but not limited to self-harm, eating disorders, and sexual assault. Other things to note: overwhelmingly all participants report low feelings of self-worth; and overwhelmingly they all agree that helping others is important to them.
