MoDE Foundation welcomes Candice Robb and Carolyn Rowlett to deepen your knowledge about topics related to the Science of Reading and effective advocacy. This informative webinar explores what the Science of Reading is, how it is taught, and why it is critical to teaching students to read. It will also explore how to effectively advocate and collaborate with schools to ensure a student receives the support and resources they need to thrive in school and beyond. Join us for an evening of education and empowerment for professionals and parents alike. This event qualifies for CLE with the Missouri Bar Association. Candice Robb Bio: Candice Robb is a K-3 Literacy Improvement Consultant for the Heart of Missouri RPDC. She is a retired elementary educator with 15 years of experience in the classroom. Candice is a National Board Certified teacher in Literacy Reading-Language Arts for Early and Middle Childhood. Candice had the pleasure of teaching elementary grades 1-4, and occasionally taught two grade levels combined. Candice began her teaching career in Northeast Arkansas for her first six years and taught her last nine years in the state of Alaska. She spent two years of her Alaskan tenure in the beautiful cruise ship port of Ketchikan, and seven years in a remote fishing village in the Aleutian Islands. There, Candice began her Science of Reading journey with the CORE Online Elementary Reading Academy. She saw firsthand the amazing positive impact on the literacy success of young learners. Candice was a Literacy Team leader, guiding her colleagues through an RTI/MTSS approach grounded in literacy best practices. As a part of the Heart of Missouri Literacy team, Candice facilitates LETRS trainings in Columbia and on location at school sites throughout the region. Candice assists administrators and literacy leaders in planning quality literacy professional development for faculty, and in navigating the latest DESE literacy guidelines including curriculum selection, reimbursement, and assessments. Candice now calls Jefferson City home, where she lives with her husband (also a retired Alaska educator), their young son and daughter, and one incorrigible Golden Retriever. Carolyn Rowlett Bio: Carolyn practiced law for thirteen years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. During the time she was raising her daughter, she became Orton-Gillingham trained and tutored at Educational Therapy Center (ETC) for 10 years. She provided reading instruction to children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, but also those with additional disabilities including ADHD/ADD, Autism, Tourette Syndrome, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. During her tenure at ETC, she witnessed first-hand the struggles parents had within their school districts in obtaining the appropriate services for their children. Knowing her legal background, the owner of ETC began asking Carolyn to attend IEP meetings with parents who were unsure of the process and needed advocacy assistance. Soon it was apparent that the need for advocacy was great enough for her to start her own business. In 2019, Carolyn opened Dyslexia Advocates, LLC, and began working in the capacity of both advocate and attorney for parents in Missouri and Kansas. Carolyn attended the Institute for Special Education Advocacy at William & Mary Law School and completed the Council of Parent Attorney Advocate (COPAA)’s Special Education Law & Related Services Online Training for Attorneys. She also served as an IEP meeting facilitator for the State of Missouri for two years. She currently serves as a moderator on the message boards for COPAA and A Day in Our Shoes. Carolyn lives in Kansas City with her husband, recent college graduate (go Tigers!) daughter, three spoiled cats, and a sweet Labrador Retriever mix.
