Advancing the Community in Pursuit of Equity and Justice

BEC is a trusted community center for low-income older adults, adults with disability, and families, providing social services and advocacy.

The organization opened its doors as the Veterans Equity Center in December 1999 to honor, serve and advocate for Filipino World War II veterans and their families.

To reflect the expanding services provided to low-income immigrant San Francisco seniors, people with disabilities, and families, the organization changed its name to the Bayanihan Equity Center in 2017.

BEC's mission is to provide culturally responsive services to address the needs and advance the rights of marginalized communities in pursuit of equity and justice.

Our Services

Food Access

BEC created the Supplemental Grocery Program (SGP), a free temporary food assistance program for individuals affected by the pandemic, and are unable to access food pantry sites.  The program currently serves 290+ households (650+ individuals).

BEC is also a partner site of EatSF's Vouchers 4 Veggies Program, providing vouchers that can be used to purchase groceries at participating grocery stores and farmers markets in San Francisco.

Social Activities

BEC convenes seniors and adults with disabilities through activities designed to focus on education and wellness in the community. Activities are planned and based on consumer needs and interests, with the intent of developing a sense of community amongst consumers. We host activities such as arts and crafts, monthly bingo, field trips, and many more.

In partnership with the Community Music Center, BEC hosts a tuition-free choir for older adults. Participation in musical activity aims to provide personal, social, artistic and quality of life benefits. No prior singing experience is needed to join.

Case Management

BEC provides one-on-one assistance for individuals in areas such as housing referrals, home visits, food assistance, accompaniment to MediCal/ Social Security Administration appointments, burial and funeral arrangements and reimbursements, transportation assistance, employment referrals, special power of attorney, and etc.

Congressional Gold Medal Award Ceremonies

BEC continues to honor, serve, and advocate for its initial service population, Filipino World War II veterans and their families, by hosting Congressional Gold Medal Award Ceremonies. The Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) is the highest award bestowed by the United States Congress to express national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.

In accordance Public Law 114-265, the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015 awards a Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) collectively to the Filipino Veterans of World War II , in recognition of their outstanding wartime achievements and honorable service to the United States during World War II.

The BEC hosts CGM Award Ceremonies in Northern California to present certified veterans with the bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal.
