It started with a film, it became a mission! The mission continues!
Like you, we’re just people, who care deeply about protecting Africa’s vulnerable wildlife. Our stellar reputation has been earned, project by project, through building relationships with the people and organizations most impacted by poaching and human/wildlife conflicts, through funding, mentoring, and amplifying their initiatives.
As part of the conservation community, Over and Above Africa is dedicated to supporting our partners on the ground in protecting and defending endangered wildlife in Africa.
You choose the level of comfort for a monthly donation and we send you a membership certificate. Your funds will go towards protecting and defending endangered wildlife and educating and supporting the surrounding communities.
We are a 501 c3 Public Foundation, so your membership plan is also tax-deductible. Funds from our donors and member plans go to the people and organizations effectively working at ground zero in service of the animals we all love so much.
All donations made on our Over And Above Africa site are tax deductible!
We continue to raise funds to support monthly veterinary expenses for our first Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and for our second Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. These vital medical centers operate 24/7 and provide life-saving emergency care and recovery to wounded wildlife - when every second counts. Once they are rehabilitated, we ensure the animals' safe return to the wild.
Each center will have an operating room so the surgical needs of injured wildlife can be handled effectively, eliminating the need to make hazardous road trips, often entailing hundreds of kilometers over wild terrain. Not all injured wildlife survives the trip alone. Our facilities will allow local veterinarians to administer care for all of their animal patients in situ (on-site).
Our facilities will be equipped for triage, observation/rehabilitation, surgical and recovery areas. As each facility progresses, we will be providing educational programs for the public and teaching programs for visiting vets and students.
Human/wildlife conflicts are on the rise due to overpopulation and humans encroaching into the animals' natural habitat. So demand is high to treat those who are negatively impacted. The time to act is now!
Your participation is vital - and we've proven that we can do this together! Your donations will help us fund our monthly veterinary expenses at our first Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and build our second Wildlife Rehabilitation Center along with other projects! With many more center to follow across Africa! THANK YOU!
Who Are We?
Over and Above Africa partners with local organizations to protect endangered wildlife and the communities most impacted by human-wildlife interaction. Over the years we have equipped rangers, funded veterinarians and surgeries, provided equipment to track and monitor animals rescued from the poaching chain, supported women-led conservation initiatives, funded sustainable farming and bee hive construction to safeguard crops and elephants, and organized game reserve excursions for African children to see wildlife in person and speak with conservationists to learn from the source the challenges facing them. These are just a few ways we work together to find holistic solutions to local conditions.
We film every project for a variety of reasons. It provides full transparency as to where we allocate your funding. The videos can be shared for all to see what initiatives are pressing in Africa currently. It amplifies the voice of our many partners on the ground, in need of support to attract new donors and supporters. Small or large, your donations through Over and Above Africa’s platform impact multiple conservation initiatives. You’ll champion animals, local communities, education, and African conservation.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Nelspruit, South Africa: Our largest project since inception opens this year! Currently, veterinarians in the region have to drive hundreds of km’s to access equipment like X-Ray machines and MRIs, which will now be available for use in our wildlife center - saving countless lives that could otherwise be lost. This will be the only approved rehabilitation center endorsed to treat animals in both the red and white zones. The red zone refers to wildlife infected with Tuberculosis (TB) and the white zone to animals not infected, that traverse Kruger National Park. (click here to learn more)
Cheetah Relocation: In Partnership with the Aspinall Foundation, We Wild Africa, and Babananga Private Game Reserve, we successfully collared 4 endangered cheetahs and relocated them to a new, safe game reserve where they will mate with the cheetahs already on the reserve to strengthen DNA variation and establish new cheetah communities. Less than 6,000 remain in the wild today, which is due primarily to poaching. Additionally, cheetahs are difficult to establish in new areas as they do not do well in altercations with other predators.
Elephant Herd Relocation: In Partnership with Zululand Conservation Trust & Manyoni Private Game Reserve, we safely relocated an elephant herd at risk of being culled to the Babanango Private Game Reserve, South Africa - where new herds will be established on ample acreage and their safety is ensured. It was one of our "largest" projects!
Lioness Rewilding: In Partnership with the Aspinall Foundation and We Wild Africa, we have funded tracking collars, translocation, and the rewilding of four lionesses to Babanango Private Game Reserve in South Africa.
Protecting Pangolins: We have funded multiple pangolin projects from medical treatment and rehabilitation needs, to telemetry tracking and monitoring programs that safeguard their successful relief. Most of the pangolins we've helped to protect were rescued from the poaching trade. Sadly, pangolins are currently the world's most trafficked mammal. Ironically, they are in such high demand for the mythical healing properties of their scales; a false belief as their scales have been proven to hold no medicinal value.
Seed Funding to Help Launch Damien Mander’s Akashinga Female Rangers: When Damien Mander had the extraordinary idea of empowering local women in Africa to become rangers, we were one of a handful of trusted organizations that Damien approached to help him raise the necessary funds to actualize his ambitious mission. He was successful, these women became the Akashingas and are now considered world-famous Rangers by all who know them!
We were honored to be a small part of his incredible dream to create an empowered, all-female team of rangers protecting wildlife. Be a part of ours to build wildlife rehabilitation clinics across Africa!
