Our Story
Below Sea Level Aid was established in 2023, driven by a deep commitment to addressing the pressing needs of vulnerable populations in the region. What began as a modest initiative—a monthly, street-based outreach day focused on distributing bagged lunches and essential clothing to the unhoused community—quickly grew into a more comprehensive effort. Since our start, Below Sea Level Aid has expanded its scope and impact, laying the groundwork for a sustainable, community-driven organization dedicated to supporting those most in need in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes.
In less than a year, our efforts have resulted in significant achievements. Through a combination of grants and donations, we have successfully raised over $43,000, enabling us to sustain and grow our initiatives. More importantly, we have been able to provide vital support to hundreds of individuals and families across the New Orleans area, addressing critical needs and fostering stronger community ties.
What We Do
Direct Services: provide a comprehensive array of harm reduction supplies, including emergency contraception, safer drug use supplies, hygiene products, and more. In addition, we offer case management services to facilitate emergency shelter linkage, crisis intervention, food insecurity support, and access to other vital social services.
Policy Reform: Stigmatizing policies create significant barriers for individuals seeking essential services. We concentrate on addressing local and national policies related to encampment sweeps, the criminalization of homelessness and drug use supplies, and improving access to harm reduction services in rural communities.
Education: We offer Overdose Reversal Training and Street-Based Outreach 101 to community members and organizations. These trainings, conducted by our experienced staff, are available both in-person and via Zoom.
