Campaign cover for BETA

BETA

In a chalk-dusted Midwestern climbing gym, a multigenerational group of climbers, friends, lovers, and mentors, push the boundaries of community, as a rival gym encroaches across town. BETA is an ensemble play set in Beta Zone, a beloved but decaying indoor climbing gym in the “it’s fine” Midwest. Moving between Back Then and Now, Lynn, the gym’s general manager has inherited not the life she imagined but the responsibility of holding a fragile community together. Her mother Carol, the gym’s abrasive head routesetter, remains frozen in time and grief, after the disappearance of Lynn’s father, a climber presumed dead in an Alaskan avalanche. As a sleek new gym opens nearby, poaching staff and members, Beta Zone faces financial collapse, and with it, the possible end of a haven that has quietly sustained dozens of lives.

Playwright Lawrence Dial and director Molly Shayna Cohen are seeking funding for a week-long workshop culminating in a site specific reading in Brooklyn at Bouldering Project, Gowanus on May 31st @8pm. All funds will go directly to the actors involved to bringing the piece to life - and onto the wall. As a fiscally sponsored production through Producer Hub, a 501c3 non-profit, all donations are tax deductible.
