If you’ve been to a BKB event or to our HQ in the past few months, you’ve probably met Dunkin. A tiny boy who seems to be part teddy bear, Dunkin is a beacon of joy, always excited to see people and meet animal friends. He never barks, is a gentleman with his potty habits, and is super content to sit in his bed on the desk and provide companionship.

Looking at his happy face and witnessing his easy-going demeanor, it’s hard to tell that Dunkin is in constant pain.

Dunkin came to us as a baby, an “extra-miniature” miniature poodle who needed feeding support to survive, and from the start, something wasn’t right with his back legs. He couldn’t walk and struggled to use them at all.

We’ve ruled out infections, congenital diseases, and neurological issues and found that Dunkin has a severe congenital defect in his back legs. His joints never developed normally, leaving him unable to bear weight. He’s hopping on the fronts of his knees while he kneecaps are on the back. The stress has caused muscle loss, inflammation, and constant discomfort.

The best option to relieve Dunkin’s pain is a surgery to amputate both rear legs above the knees. It’s a big procedure for such a small pup, but it will finally give him freedom from pain and a chance at the joyful, mobile life he deserves.
