at the Black Healing Collective, we recognize that housing insecurity and economic strain are among the greatest challenges facing Black women and femmes. these challenges don’t just affect where they live—they ripple through every part of life, impacting mental health, the ability to plan for the future, and overall well-being.

that’s why we created the Coven, a community care network providing 6-12 months of rent assistance and therapy support. this program aims to reduce financial burdens, create space for healing, and open pathways to lasting transformation. and is a result of 2023 needs assessment showcasing the importance of accessible, culturally competent support for Black women and femmes.

in 2025, our goal is to raise $250,000 to expand our impact and meet the overwhelming need. currently, over 100 Black women are on our waitlist for rent assistance, therapy, and other vital resources.

about our research

we hypothesize that providing Black women with rent assistance for 6-12 months will lead to significant improvements in various aspects of their lives. we anticipate the following positive changes among participants:

reduced stress levels and improved mental health: with financial stability, participants will experience a reduction in stress and anxiety related to economic hardship. this, in turn, is expected to result in fewer symptoms of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and an increase in emotional well-being.
improved nervous system regulation: lower levels of financial stress may enable participants to transition from a survival-based response to a more regulated state, reducing chronic stress and its physical manifestations, thus supporting a healthier nervous system.
increased capacity for long-term planning and future-oriented thinking: free from the immediate pressures of housing insecurity, participants will have the mental bandwidth to think futuristically, set meaningful goals, and take deliberate steps toward self-improvement, such as continuing their education or advancing in their careers.
improved financial health and savings capacity: with reduced rent expenses, participants will likely have the opportunity to save money and potentially invest in areas that can further stabilize their lives, such as education, health care, or entrepreneurship.
increased engagement in therapeutic and supportive services: participants will be more likely to engage in therapy, support groups, or wellness services, as they are less preoccupied with immediate financial survival, leading to long-term personal growth and healing.

about the Collective

the Black Healing Collective occupies a critical niche within the broader ecosystem of organizations working to improve women’s mental and physical health by centering the unique needs of Black women and femmes. while many organizations focus on general mental health or physical well-being, we address the intersection of systemic inequities, cultural trauma, and individual healing for a community that has been historically marginalized in these spaces.

our programs, like Femme Forward and the Coven, are uniquely designed to provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care, filling gaps in services that often fail to consider the lived experiences of Black women. by providing free therapy, emergency rent assistance, and advocacy for systemic change, we not only address immediate needs but also build long-term change.

we complement the work of other organizations by partnering to expand reach and impact. for example, through collaborations with local community groups, therapists, and advocacy organizations, we create a continuum of care that ensures our participants have access to comprehensive support systems.

our community extends to those affected by family policing systems like CPS, highlighting disparities and advocating for holistic, family-centered support systems. through campaigns like Shattered Silence, we amplify these narratives and drive awareness while offering tangible resources that empower healing and liberation.
