The Boston Hurricanes is committed to increasing the level of play in Massachusetts youth volleyball by providing evening summer clinics designed for all levels of experience, led by dedicated coaches and players with a passion for sharing their love of the sport. We offer both Skills clinics and Positional clinics. This will be our 17th year we are offering our Skills clinic, and the 2nd year offering our Positional clinics. Throughout the last decade or so, we have advanced the training of hundreds of athletes, helping them reach their goals of making it onto varsity and national club teams.

Skills clinics groups athletes based on skill level to set them up for success and to learn at the correct pace: Category 1 (Y12), Category 2 (Beginners), Category 3 (Intermediate) and Category 4 (Advanced).

No matter their level, all athletes will receive training through high-volume repetition, game-like scenarios, and breakdown of fundamentals. This training will be facilitated by our experienced and knowledgeable coaching staff, whose goal is to balance immediate feedback with self-correction and foster a fun and focused environment. Each evening’s plan is curated by our director to maximize learning potential while emphasizing hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, competition, and accountability.

Disclosure: Parents and caregivers are welcome to sign up their children based on the descriptions of different levels of play, however, placement is subject to change based on evaluation of both the director and court coaches.

CATEGORY 1: Our baby storms! We are thrilled to boast a program that has coached athletes between the ages of 5-12 for the better part of the last decade. Formerly known as our Y12 group, our Category 1 storms are just starting out on their volleyball journey, are under the age of 12, and have little to no volleyball experience. This is a great place for little athletes to develop a love for the sport. They will learn volleyball fundamentals (including but not limited to: forearm passing, setting, serving, attacking, blocking), develop athleticism, and build hand- eye coordination and balance as they traverse obstacle courses, games, and drills with our high- energy staff.

CATEGORY 2: Athletes in our Category 2 group are just ever so slightly larger and older versions of our Category 1 participants. They are also coming in with little to no experience and may just be trying their hand at the sport; however, they’ll find the level of drills offered to them to be more age- appropriate. Category 2 athletes will also develop their athleticism and coordination but have a greater focus on the pure fundamentals of volleyball (including but not limited to: forearm passing, setting, serving, attacking, blocking).

CATEGORY 3: Category 3 is where athletes start truly building their power, speed, and court IQ. Those participating in this group will have most likely been on a volleyball team already (middle school, club, Freshman, JV 1/ JV2) and have somewhere between 2-4 years of experience. Fundamentals should be solid, but coaches will ensure athletes are comfortable with the basics and review finer details in their mechanics. Category 3 athletes will focus heavily on serving, serving placement, passing challenging balls, and widening their repertoire of offensive shots while entering more competitive mindsets and spaces.

CATEGORY 4: Our Category 4 group will be comprised of our most advanced players, most of whom are varsity and club level athletes. By popular demand, the Category 4 group has undergone the most drastic changes of the Boston Hurricanes clinics, requiring an assessment before becoming a Category 4 to ensure pace, challenges, and competitiveness are kept at a high. Category 4 athletes will be focusing on personal goal setting, competitive games, and strategy, while continuing to fine- tune their mechanics. Their curriculum includes, but it not limited to: serve receive, serving spots, different offensive shots, blocking, and making aggressive plays happen in game scenarios. They will also have the advantage of film, where they will be able to watch themselves in real time, receive coach feedback, and attempt executing those skills again. We are excited to respond to their feedback from our 2025 Advanced group, and even more excited to see how great these athletes will be by the end of the summer.
