In the heart of Cañon City, at the quiet west end of Main Street, a simple idea began to take shape in 2016: what if there were a place where teenagers could walk in after school and feel completely safe, completely known, and completely welcome? Considering the difficulties that young people face, what would make the difference for them? This idea, partnered with faith that such a spot could and should exist, bore the inspiration for The Bridge.

The Early Days (2016–2017)

When The Bridge first opened its doors, a miraculous thing that required walking in faith that God would provide, the Bridge was more vision than tradition. Worn tables, mismatched couches, donated table top games, and a handful of volunteers filled the room—but what it lacked in polish, it made up for in purpose. The goal was clear: create a fun, high-quality environment where teens from 7th to 12th grade could gather without pressure, without cost, and without judgment. A place where they could be known for the unique individuals they were created to be.

Word spread quickly. Students stopped by regularly, as Bridge Friday Nights became a highlight of their week. Laughter echoed off the walls as friendships formed over pool tables and pizza boxes. The response was inspiring, as often more than 100 youth could be found at The Bridge on any given Friday. Community partnerships began to grow, and the space was soon hosting gatherings like Young Life meetings as well, further deepening its reach among local youth. What started as a hopeful experiment began turning into something dependable.

Building Consistency (2018–2019)

Over the next few years, The Bridge found its rhythm. Friday events became anticipated traditions. Volunteer numbers grew, as they showed up week after week, not just to supervise—but to listen. Mentorship quietly became the intended heartbeat of the organization. Conversations over homework and activities at school turned into talks about life goals . Board games became opportunities to teach teamwork and resilience. Staff and volunteers invested deeply, learning students’ stories and walking alongside them through victories and setbacks. The Bridge was no longer just a place to go. It was becoming a place to belong.

Holding Steady Through Uncertainty (2020–2021)

When the world shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic, youth felt the impact deeply, social isolation, uncertainty, and disruption. Anxiety, depression, and a deep ache of loneliness were felt by youth that would reframe connection with them entirely. The growing team at The Bridge recognized the difficulties that would be ahead of them in this changing climate, but their commitment didn’t waver. Programming adapted. Outreach expanded. Leaders found creative ways to stay connected and maintain safe engagement. In a season defined by distance, The Bridge worked intentionally to preserve connection. Furthermore, in a time of increased isolation and social distancing, The Bridge made a daring and bold decision to expand its open hours, adding afternoon programming Tuesday through Thursday and committing to bringing on additional staff to man these additional days of programming, in order that they might be as impactful as the long-term Bridge Friday Nights. For many teens, knowing the doors would remain open—knowing someone would still be there—offered stability in unstable times.

Raising Up Leaders (2022–2023)

As the years progressed, something new began to emerge: the development of relationships with students took a natural turn in establishing talents and abilities, and it was soon recognized that students didn’t just want to come to the Bridge to be served, but to serve their peers, giving back in a simple yet profound sort of way. Thus, the Bridge Builders student leadership program began. The launch of the Bridge Builders student leadership program marked a turning point. Teens stepped into responsibility—helping run events, welcoming newcomers, and modeling respect and service. They learned to lead not with status, but with character. Meanwhile, the volunteer base grew. Local churches and community members invested time and energy, strengthening the relational fabric that held the fledgling organization together. The Bridge was no longer just staff-led—it was becoming community-built.

A Community Fixture (2024–2025)

By its ninth and tenth years, The Bridge had become woven into the rhythm of life in Cañon City. Weekly gatherings felt established, familiar, and trusted. Students knew where they could go after school. Parents knew their kids would be safe. Free meals and low-cost snacks & cafe drinks met practical needs. Tutoring and workshops added educational as well as extra-curricular support. But beyond the programs, the real impact remained relational: adults who showed up consistently, teens who felt seen, and friendships that carried beyond the walls of the building. What began as a vision had become a cornerstone.

Ten Years Later

A decade after opening its doors, The Bridge stands not just as a youth center, but as a story—one written on ordinary Tuesdays, loud Friday nights, quiet mentoring conversations, and countless moments of encouragement. Its success cannot be measured only in attendance numbers or events hosted, but in confidence built, leadership cultivated, deep friendships built, and lives steadied during formative years. Ten years in, the mission remains the same as day one: to provide a safe, welcoming space where teens can grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually—supported by adults who care deeply about them, both in the present, and in their future.

We believe that The Bridge is making a significant impact on the youth of Fremont County, as well as an impact in their families, schools, workplaces, and the greater community where they have an impact.
