I am genetically incapable of telling a short story, so bear with me…I will do my best. I am an alcoholic in recovery…almost eight years as I write this…and I spent many years in addiction making promises to myself and my family and not keeping most of them. I have done a much better job the last eight years keeping my word and this is a big one. There are so many reasons I am determined to see it through. My mom is a runner and many years ago she finished the Chicago Marathon. She will be here on 10/13/24. My children love me despite all of my mistakes and have been my biggest cheerleaders over the last eight years. I work hard to make them proud every day. I also do this for my daughter who passed away just over eight years ago at the age of 14, who didn't get a sober mom in life, but I know she's watching now. And I do this for me, just so I can say I did it. 

Why Big Shoulders Fund though? In a previous reincarnation I was a middle and high school teacher as well as an in-home visitor for the Head Start program and have seen first-hand what a difference equal footing in education can make. I am currently employed with White Lodging, which has ties to Big Shoulders as well, so this was a logical choice for me.
