Care for Real, our neighborhood food pantry, will be moving to a new home at 5838-5840 N Broadway! Over the past few months, the Building Dignity capital campaign has raised about 96% of its 5 million dollar goal. The campaign will help pay for and renovate their new space as well as put the organization on steady financial footing. Care for Real has been operating for over 50 years serving Edgewater, Rogers Park, Bowmanville, Andersonville, Uptown and West Ridge. Over the past three years, they've seen demand soar. Here's just a snapshot: 26% increase in unique individuals served in 2024 compared to 2023 with nearly 50,000 food pantry visits In 2022-23, we distributed 2,119,017 pounds of food to our neighbors in need. In 2024 we served 12,720 unique individuals (compared to 2,927 in 2020). The new building on Broadway will double our square footage and greatly improve our capacity to meet the increasing needs of Care for Real's clients. But the capital campaign goes beyond just finding a more functional space. Care for Real embodies what so many of us value about living in this community. We take care of each other and we take care of everybody. We are really excited to open the doors to a brand new facility that so visibly demonstrates our shared values: while we may not be able to solve every problem, where we live, we make sure everyone has enough to eat.
