What is accessibility?

Accessibility is the products, devices, programs, services, resources, or environments are available to all people, regardless of ability, age, or status, with the aim to eliminate barriers, ensuring equal access and participation for all, including those with disabilities, limited mobility, or diverse background.

What does OAJ do?

Build resources such as the OAJ Style and Accessibility Guide to help journalists make their news more accessible to the audience.
Train journalists on accessible journalism practices.
Publish an accessible magazine about journalism and accessibility for journalists called The Word.

Why make news accessible?

Many people miss out on news.

28.7% of Americans have disabilities, with some disabilities affecting their ability to access traditional news formats.
50% have chronic illnesses impacting sight, hearing, or understanding.
54% read at a 6th-grade level or lower; 20% are illiterate. But journalists write at an 8th-grade level, making news less accessible.

But in 2025, most news sites still had accessibility problems — some as small as missing alt text and color contrast errors, while some were completely inaccessible. The problem got worse in 2026.

We also want to grow journalism jobs. Our goal is the use accessibility to reach more audiences, therefore growing the need for factual, accessible journalism along the way.
