About Us.

The New Albany-Plain Township Historical Society is now raising funds for a bronze memorial statue to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 2025.

New Albany, Ohio, wants all to know that we honor and support the Vietnam Veterans who have lived and worked in our city and those who are citizens today. For too many years, the American servicemembers who fought or died during the Vietnam War have not received the respect and recognition they deserve for the sacrifices they made.

The New Albany Plain-Township Historical Society was founded in 1975 and currently maintains the Ealy House Museum on the corner of Market Street and Granville Road. In our 1860 farmhouse, built by the Ealy family, the society oversees and preserves documents, oral histories and many historic artifacts from the New Albany area. With our volunteers we freely share the New Albany experience past and present.

Inspiration For The Memorial.

Our 50th Anniversary memorial includes a life-size bronze statue to be placed in New Albany’s planned Veterans Park. Created by Pittsburgh’s nationally recognized sculptor Michael Kraus, the final design depicts Eleanor Butsko placing her Gold Star Service Flag on the door of her Bevelhymer Road home which once sat where the Rocky Fork Metro Park is today.

The flag was hung in honor of her oldest son Albert “Mike” Butsko, who was New Albany’s only fatality during the war. Mike, serving as a Navy Corpsman with the Marines, was killed on September 10, 1967, while on one of his “missions of mercy” as a fellow marine wrote years later. The design was chosen so that it may represent all Gold Star Families or others who lost a friend during the war.

We will dedicate the memorial on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2026.

New Veterans Memorial Coming to New Albany

Plans are underway for a new Veterans Memorial in New Albany to honor those who have served while adding richness to the existing greenspace network. In order to create a unique Veterans Memorial for New Albany, the City of New Albany worked with landscape architect MKSK and a focus group composed of New Albany residents, veterans, and veterans’ advocates.

Upon the request of Mayor Sloan Spalding and the City of New Albany, the New Albany Company will donate 2 acres of land adjacent to New Albany Village Hall and the existing New Albany Police Department for the project. Part of the donation also includes land that formerly housed the police station and a fuel station. This donation enables the City to move forward with its plans for a Veterans Memorial as well as commence the development of the City’s Rose Run Park Phase II, a significant next step in the expansion of the green space and parkland that is such an important element of the Village Center. This location also has access to ample parking and is well connected to the existing pedestrian circulation.
