Black Legacy Leaders is a living archive—an exhibition rooted in recognition, gratitude, and community memory.

Each year, we honor individuals whose impact often goes unseen but deeply felt. These are the leaders who serve quietly, build consistently, and shape culture through action rather than applause. BLL exists to pause long enough to say: we see you.

For the 2026 exhibition, we continue the tradition of passing the torch forward. Past Legacy Leaders are invited to nominate someone whose work, integrity, and commitment deserve to be preserved and uplifted. This creates a chain of recognition—one generation acknowledging the next.

Working with artists from across the African diaspora—from West Africa, Ghana to South Los Angeles—each portrait becomes more than a painting. It is a collaboration between story and image, history and present day. The artist studies the nominee’s life, work, and community impact to translate their legacy into visual form.

The exhibition takes place during Black History Month, transforming the gallery into a space of learning, reflection, and celebration. Visitors are introduced not only to the artwork, but to the lives behind it—educating South Los Angeles on who these leaders are, the impact they’ve made, and the communities they continue to build.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening is the surprise reveal. Nominees arrive unaware of what awaits them. Standing before a covered portrait, they are invited forward as the curtain is lifted—revealing their image for the first time in front of family, friends, and community. It is a moment of gratitude, honor, and shared pride.

Black Legacy Leaders is a non-profit, community-driven event made possible through collaboration, trust, and collective support. Together, we celebrate legacy not as something of the past—but as something living, breathing, and still unfolding.
