Friends of Historic Preservation has worked for five decades to protect, celebrate, and share Iowa City’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. The organization advocates for historic landmarks, fosters community appreciation of local history, and connects residents with the stories that shape the city.

Founded in 1975 by a small group determined to save one of Iowa City’s oldest landmarks—the First Presbyterian Church, known today as Old Brick—the effort not only rescued the building from demolition but also sparked a local preservation movement that went on to serve as a national model for community-driven action.

Officially renamed Friends of Historic Preservation (FHP) in 1988, the organization broadened its scope and purpose. Over the years, FHP has rehabbed and restored historic houses in older neighborhoods, offered workshops, house tours, and other events, awarded grants, sponsored books on local history and preservation, and founded the Salvage Barn and Tool Library.
