Lisa's Journey With Triple Negative Breast Cancer Her Story Her Fight

A little over a month ago I found a breast lump in my right breast. I kept having a feeling not to put off going and get it checked. I finally made the appointment with my doctor, she could feel the lump too and we made the appointment for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. They confirmed I have a mass. I had a biopsy yesterday and today found out I have invasive carcinoma and ductal carcinoma. Breast cancer. It’s small and it sounds like we caught it early. I don’t know much yet. I will have an MRI next Thursday and then I have an appointment with a surgeon on Friday to discuss the next steps. I have faith that I will be okay.

I’ve had several people reach out to see if I got my last result yet. I got it late Monday afternoon but needed time to process. I’ve been diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Not the outcome we wanted at all. TNBC tends to be more aggressive than other breast cancers. It is fast growing with fewer treatment options. I was told I will need chemotherapy for sure. I don’t know much beyond that. I have an MRI tomorrow to confirm it hasn’t spread. I meet with my surgeon Friday and my oncologist the following Friday.

I am going to fight this with everything I’ve got in me.

So much happened yesterday. I’ll try to keep this short.The surgeon wants me to do chemotherapy first, and then do surgery. She also wants me to start chemo asap with how fast my cancer grows. She does think it’s stage 1 possibly stage 2. Great news!! I did catch it early! I have a few more tests they want to run like a pet ct scan and an ekg. I have to have another MRI as well. My oncologist moved my appointment with him to Monday. I could possibly have my port placed this week and start chemo right after that.

With all of this, Kaylee and her mission president have decided it’s best that she come home from her mission a couple weeks early. Kaylee is flying home on Monday!! I CANNOT wait to hug her and see her! I told her she was going to get sick of me really fast.

I’m grateful for my doctors working so quickly. I truly feel I am in good hands with them.

These amazing students from Herriman High all showed up at my house this morning right after I got home from the gym. There is a tradition at Herriman that the boys give each girl in the school a rose on Valentine’s Day. A couple of these boys are Tyler’s good friends. They knew about my recent breast cancer diagnosis so they all came to bring me a rose. Made my day a lot brighter. Thank you so much to Tyler’s friend Traedan for thinking of me today.

I never updated after my appointment with my oncologist Monday. It was a lot to take in and then we were focused on Kaylee coming home that night.

I found out I will be having chemo weekly for 24 weeks. 12 weeks of one set and then 12 weeks of another set of chemo. They are doing it weekly to try to minimize symptoms and to also be able to watch for and catch complications sooner.

The doctor thought I could start the 20th. But I need 2 more tests and there wasn’t availability until next week for the tests. I have surgery tomorrow morning to place my chemo port. And I will be starting chemo on the 26th.

Start of a journey. This is for those that are family, friends or others that are wondering, concerned or interested what’s going on. Lisa was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on February 1st. I don’t need to go into details here. Lisa has posted previously about this the last few weeks. Lisa is getting her port today and then chemotherapy starts on February 26th. This won’t be an easy journey but we have faith in God and the doctors for the best plan going forward. There have been medical advances in the past few years that improves the probabilities of success to be cancer free.

We were taken back with the news and not sure how to respond or act sometimes and that's ok. Just be patient with us. You may feel the same way and not sure what to do, just follow your heart. You can’t go wrong doing good. So a text, phone call, prayers or other things are all welcome. We are all learning as we go along.

We appreciate all the love, prayers and support we have received so far and will need in the future. We are truly grateful.

Good news!! Today I had a CT scan on my chest and abdomen and also a full body bone scan. My insurance wouldn’t cover a pet scan so I had to have these 3 tests instead. They were all clear and showed my cancer hasn’t spread! I’m so grateful and relieved!

Chemo starts Monday and I’m ready to kick cancers butt!!

I selfishly wanted to keep my long hair as long as possible. But then I remembered my sweet niece Lila May who passed away 8 1/2 years ago from neuroblastoma. She always wanted to have long hair but couldn’t because of chemo.

I found out I couldn’t donate my hair once I started chemo so tonight my friend Linsey cut it for me before I start chemo tomorrow. I’ll be donating 12 inches of hair to Wigs For Kids in Lila May’s honor. Thank you to Linsey for helping me! I don’t think I’ve ever had hair this short, but soon I won’t even have any so I guess it doesn’t matter! LOL! So grateful I can make a difference to a child somewhere!

Chemo treatment one is complete! 23 to go! Chad and Kaylee went with me and then my mom brought us lunch and traded Chad the last 2 hours so Chad could go to work. One of the chemotherapy’s they had to watch me the 1st 10 mins I was getting it because 50% of patients can possibly have a negative reaction to it. I looked at Chad and Kaylee and said “I’m going to be the 50% that doesn’t have a reaction” and I was right! No reaction!

They said most patients hardest days are days 4-6. Then day 7 I should be feeling pretty good. Then I’ll be back to chemo the next day. This week will be the indicator of how I should react to the chemo these 1st 12 weeks of chemotherapy.

We are optimistic and keeping as positive as possible!! Kicking cancers butt one day at a time!!

Triple negative is the type of breast cancer I have. This is the best explanation I have found to describe it.

*Think of a cancer cell as a house. To get inside to destroy the cancer, we must bybass three locks on the front door: estrogen, progesterone, and HER2.

If your cancer tests positive for any of these three locks, which are known as receptors, then doctors have a few keys they can use to get inside the cell and destroy it.

If you have triple negative breast cancer those locks aren't there. So the keys doctors usually use won't work. But chemotherapy is still an effective option.

I’ve been up since 2:00 am. After laying in bed for 2 hours, I ended up just getting up. Good news, I’ve gotten a bunch of stuff done I haven’t felt up to the last few days. Now just sitting enjoying the quiet until I have to make sure Tyler is up for school.

Time for an update from my first week of chemo.

Overall it went better than I anticipated. I’m so grateful for that! I only had a nauseous feeling twice. Once on Thursday and once on Saturday. I took my prescription for that as soon as I felt nausea and it totally worked. Biggest side effect was bone pain throughout the evenings and fatigue worse through the day and week. I’ll take both of those over nausea any day! I was also more tired each day with Saturday being my hardest day, which was what they expected. I was really tired and felt pretty weak all day. Luckily we had a low key day so I got plenty of downtime. I was happy to feel well enough yesterday to attend church. I was grateful to go take the sacrament. I want to go as long as I’m able. By the end of church I was pretty exhausted. I did get pretty emotional last night while talking to Abby. It’s hard to grasp that this will be my new normal for now. I cried as we laid together. I told Abby I was sorry that I broke down. She said “You’ve always been strong for our family and it was time for them to be strong for me.”

I sadly only slept 2 hours last night which is most likely from a steroid I have to take the day before and after treatments. They think I’m super sensitive to the steroid because it’s affecting my sleep and also my white blood cell count. My white blood cell count is actually high today instead of dropping from the chemo. I’m not sick so he’s not concerned about it being high, but is lowering my steroid dose as he thinks that is why the blood count is high. I love my PA as much as my doctor. He’s such a great guy! He knows I’m a member of the church so he shared that he prays in his car once he arrives to work specifically that he will know what’s best for his patients care. I loved that. To me, another tender mercy that he has God on his side too to help me beat this cancer! He anticipates that this week may go like last week, so I’ll take it!

I’m getting my 2nd week of chemo as I type this. 2 down 22 to go!!

I spent most of yesterday on the couch or in my bed. I figured I’d overdone it the day before but felt worse through the day. I was pretty discouraged yesterday as I had to miss Tyler’s first high school soccer game but I knew I just couldn’t go. I ended up waking up with a fever at 2:00 last night and had to call the doctor on call. So thankful they have me have an antibiotic on hand so I could start taking it right away. Praying I feel a little better today

Chemotherapy week 3 going in!

Last week was actually pretty good except for Thursday and the fever I got Thursday night. I didn’t feel quite as exhausted or weak thank goodness! I only got nauseous twice the whole week and the prescription kicked right in so I didn’t feel it for long. The most grateful for that!

I met with my doctor before chemo started today. My blood counts all look great. He said he’d expect these next 10 weeks to be pretty much the same as far as symptoms go. With the fatigue gradually compounding and getting worse each week. He also told me that the chemo I get my second 12 weeks will actually be every 3 weeks instead of weekly! It is a more aggressive chemo I’ll be getting so it will have worse symptoms than the ones I’m getting now. But I’m looking at it one week and sometimes one day at a time.

So I’m now 3 out of 16 chemotherapy treatments down!

Chemo treatment number 4! I saw this picture of myself and man I look tired! Only slept 2 hours last night. I guess I need to just plan on not much sleep the night before chemo. Today I’m getting my second dose of Keytruda, which is my immunotherapy medicine.

Last week went pretty good. Mostly just had fatigue and Friday the bone pain was the worst. I didn’t have to take any anti nausea medicine last week! That’s a huge win! The fatigue frustrates me, because things take longer and I have to take more breaks. But like I’ve said before, I’ll take the fatigue over nausea any day. I’m having a hard time with sleeping at night. I fall asleep fast, but then wake up a lot. And can’t fall back asleep. My hair started falling out more on Saturday. No clumps of hair, just thinning out for now. The last three days it’s been more and more. So this will be interesting. Hoping to hold off shaving my head as long as I can.

The end of last week I struggled more emotionally than I have in a while. I’m really trying to focus on the positives. But fear was creeping in. I’m going to look into a support group or something.

My white blood count is still doing really good. The doctor said today it’s good how well my body is handling the chemo so far. That’s a huge blessing too!

I knew I’d lose my hair. And I’m thankful it has lasted longer than they told me it would. But wow, nothing could have prepared me for when it really starts falling out. This is the hair just from my shower this morning and then gently brushing it after. I can’t blow dry it anymore or more comes out. Looks like I may be buzzing it soon

Who would have thought, 3 years later. I’d end up with Triple Negative Breast cancer in almost the exact same spot as my biopsy. Definitely not me!

Adding to this post, not only get your yearly mammogram. But if you find a lump. Don’t put off getting it checked! If I’d waited for my yearly mammogram this year instead of going when I found the lump. It likely would have spread more with how quickly my type of cancer grows.

Chemo week 5 starting! It will be one month tomorrow that I started chemo. So far biggest symptom is still fatigue. My bones ache more towards the end of the week. I’ve noticed Thursdays are my hardest day of the week. Sleeping at night is still hard. The doctor wants me to stop taking my steroid completely. I’ll still get a steroid on my chemo days. But hopefully this will help with my sleep issues at the beginning of each week. Thankfully I had zero nausea last week again! So grateful for that! My hair is really falling out now so I’ll be shaving it tomorrow night. I know it’s just hair. But losing more and more each day has been so hard. I’ve shed many tears the last few days. Grateful to be another week closer to being done with chemo. Grateful my body is overall handling the chemo well. Grateful for all the love and support I’ve received.

I was not going to post pictures of my buzzed hair. But I’ll be vulnerable because I had to share what Tyler did. I let Chad and my kids all take turns cutting my hair. Shortly after Tyler started, he turned the clippers and started buzzing his own head! He looked at me and said “it’s just hair”. Letting me know I’ll be okay. I immediately started crying again. I know how much he loves his hair and this was a big deal. Such a sweet gesture from an amazing kid!

I’m thankful Chad, my kids, and my sweet mom all supported me last night through something they knew was so hard for me.

Happy Easter! Church was so good today. I’m so thankful for my Savior. I’m thankful for my family. My sweet mom hosted dinner tonight. All my kids were there and it was just what I needed! Just forgot to take pictures! I made a delicious salad and a yummy cake! It felt good to be in the kitchen but tonight I am worn out!

Chemo #6 today!! 10 to go! I’ve got this! At least that’s what I keep telling myself. My bloodwork was almost perfect today again. So grateful my body is overall handling everything okay so far.

Last week was definitely tougher on me emotionally. It’s still hard to believe this is my reality. I was looking at pictures from mine and Chad’s anniversary cruise last November. We had no clue what was coming our way. Life sure throws those curve balls! Wednesday and Thursday were my hardest days last week. I had a terrible headache and just didn’t feel good at all. My head has red bumps and little whiteheads all over it. It has to do with my hair falling out and my hair follicles. I have a topical prescription for it, but so far it’s not working very well. It is sometimes painful and sometimes itchy. Biggest symptom I have is still just fatigue. I did get a few things to help me with sleeping at night and that has helped a lot! I still wake up, but I’m able to fall back asleep quickly.

So grateful to have been able to attend General Conference in person this morning. Don’t worry mom, I wore a mask until we took this picture! So thankful for the gospel in my life and the peace it brings me.

Also, I got a new wig yesterday. We will see how much I wear it though

I took that sucker off as soon as we got in the car! Lol! I wanted a wig to wear here and there. But no way I could wear one daily. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Chemo #7 today!! Crazy I’m already this far!

Last week was actually pretty good. I feel like a broken record, but my biggest symptom is still the fatigue and bone pain at the end of the week. I can no longer feel my tumor!! So I know the chemo is working! Yay! My doctor gave me an A+ this week! All my blood counts are still great. Right where we want them to be. I’ll no longer have to meet with my doctors weekly. I’ll still come each Monday but just to draw my blood and to do chemo.

I’m just so grateful. I really do not want this trial. It still seems so surreal that this is my life currently. But so grateful my body is doing what it needs to do to fight the cancer and that my symptoms have been tolerable.

Chemo #8 today! 8 more to go!! Tyler’s my helper today. So grateful he could come! I’m sure he’s happy to be missing school.

Last week was pretty much the same as the weeks prior. Once again, Thursday was my hardest day. With the bone pain and fatigue a little more this last week. They said it all compounds over the weeks. Which I can tell it is. When the fatigue hits, it hits hard and I usually have to lay down and try to nap.

I was able to attend the yard sale fundraiser my sister did over the weekend. I was amazed at the kindness of others once they knew it was a fundraiser for my cancer treatments. She will be having another yard sale this weekend in Clinton. And the silent auction is up and running online. Let me know if you need the link for that. There are some awesome things to bid on!

The woman in the 2nd picture is Bambi. She is going through chemo currently for the 2nd time. The first day I met with the oncologist they had to get my tests scheduled so I had to sit in the waiting room. I was by myself because Chad had to leave for a quick appointment and was coming back to get me. I sat down in the waiting room and the overwhelm hit hard. I was just told I’d be getting 6 months of chemo. She looked at me with the kindest eyes and told me I’d be okay. I ran into her the week before I started chemo her at the cancer office and once again she assured me I’d be okay. My mom and I were just talking about her last week and wondered how she was doing. It was so good to hug her today as we both updated each other on our progress so far.

Chemo #9 today! Each Monday is one step closer to being done with all this!

Last week was probably my hardest one yet, but even then I’m so grateful it wasn’t worse. It’s just so mentally hard to not feel good or like yourself most of the time. My friend reminded me that the fatigue is a sign my body is working hard to kill this cancer. Everyday is a new day and a fresh start. I try to get as much done in the mornings as I can and then usually rest or nap in the afternoon. I’m reminding myself to be patient with myself.

3 more of this chemo regimen and then I’ll start the nicknamed “red devil” chemotherapy. I’m pretty anxious about that one as my doctor has been preparing me that it could be a lot harder on me. I’m trying to focus on one week at a time. And being grateful for my body and how well my body really is handling this chemo overall. I’m manifesting that the “red devil” will have nothing on me and that my body will stay strong.

Chemo number 10 today!! 6 more to go!

Last week my symptoms started Monday night which shocked me! My symptoms are hitting earlier in the week which frustrated me because I used to have until Wednesday night or Thursday to get errands or other things done. Trying to be patient with myself and make sure I rest when I need to.

I realized about a week and a half ago that I actually could still feel my lump and to me it felt bigger. I was devastated, especially after I thought it was gone a few weeks ago. I let my oncologist know and he ordered an ultrasound. I had my ultrasound on Tuesday. The mass is still there and thankfully is slightly smaller. Grateful to have that peace of mind. He did say with ultrasound they don’t know if the cancer is all dead or living. But it being smaller does show the chemo is working.

Today was a hard day. I hate cancer so much. I hate what it has and will take from me. I try so hard to stay positive and grateful. But some days I let myself feel all the feels and today was one of those days.

Before cancer I was pretty healthy and getting stronger everyday. I had so much to look forward to. I look in the mirror now and barely recognize myself. I can see the effects chemo is taking on me. I try really hard to focus on one day at a time. But I am so anxious about the new chemo regimen I will be starting May 20th. I’m so incredibly thankful my body has handled these last 10 weeks of chemo pretty well and I pray my body will handle what is to come.

Grateful for a new day tomorrow. Thank you for the continued prayers and love

Tonight was Tyler’s last game of his Junior year season. I have loved watching him play! I’m so grateful I only missed the 1st preseason game. Other than that I was able to attend every game. When he made the team, I prayed I wouldn’t have to miss any games due to being too sick. Prayers were answered for sure!

At halftime tonight, Tyler called me over to him. He showed me that the team was all wearing pink ribbons in honor of me and in support of Tyler. Anyone surprised I cried!?!? Lol. Sadly, Tyler ended the game tonight with an injury. He was knocked into by another player and fell pretty hard on his shoulder. We took him to Urgent care for X-rays. It looks to be an AC separation and there could also be a tiny fracture. They are going to have a radiologist review the X-rays and we will have to take Tyler to an orthopedist as well.

After urgent care we were able to go back to the varsity game. We missed the game, but we made it for the senior night celebration. I was given flowers and got a picture with the team. So grateful for a good JV season and such great coaches and teammates for Tyler!

Chemo number 11!! 5 to go!

My doctor said I’m doing good overall. He’s amazed at how well I’m doing. My white blood count levels are lower than they’ve been this whole time, but still within a normal range. He said the chemo I’m getting currently is also a hard chemo and my body is tolerating it well. He anticipates the red devil will be the same for me. I’m praying for that!

He said I came in young and healthy and that will be to my advantage. So grateful!

Chemo number 12 complete!!! All done with Paclitaxel and Carboplatin!! And now onto Cyclophosphamide and Doxorubicin and continuing Keytruda as well.

My blood counts are holding pretty similar to last week. I’m so grateful!! The nurse was surprised I’m jumping right into the Red Devil chemo next week. Usually people choose to wait a few weeks. Once she saw my blood levels, she said it made sense to just jump right into it and get it over with! This is what I decided with my doctor as well. I’m too anxious about it to put it off and also with how aggressive my type of cancer is I want to do everything to stop it in its tracks!!

As far as symptoms go, I’m still mostly dealing with extreme fatigue and the bone pain. It’s mostly in my collar bones and shoulders. I keep saying how blessed and grateful I am that it hasn’t been worse. It has not been easy. And I honestly feel crummy and “off” most of the time. Things take me a little longer and I get tired pretty quickly. But I can usually put on a brave face and keep on going! What other choice do I have? I’m still trying to focus hard on the blessings through this trial and doing everything in my power to stay positive.

I think we should all come up with a different nickname for the red devil chemo. I heard someone call it Jesus juice because it was going to save her from her cancer. Any other ideas? Let’s hear them! Maybe I’ll come up with a simple prize for the best nickname for the red devil:)

Chemo #13 today! Only 3 more to go!!

I met with my doctor today to go over all the possible side effects of this new chemo regimen. He’s super happy with how well the last 12 weeks of chemo went for me. He is hopeful the next 12 weeks will be the same. These new chemo drugs will affect my white blood cells more. They want to see how it goes this 1st week. I’ll come in next week to have my blood tested. And then I’ll be getting a shot that will help raise my white blood count. I’ll have more fatigue. And possibly nausea. I’ll be taking my anti nausea as soon as I feel anything because I don’t want to get sick! They had me eat popsicles during the red devil chemo to hopefully prevent mouth sores.

I’m praying and hopeful my body and mind can stay strong these next 12 weeks. I’m anxious to see what these next 3 weeks will look like. I did get a blessing yesterday that helped me feel peace. I’ve got this and I am ready for this next step towards kicking cancers butt!!!

Figured I better do an update! I’m sitting here getting fluids today because I am just so exhausted! Hoping it helps. It was so nice not having to go get chemo this last Monday! After 13 weeks in a row it was good to have a break.

Last week was filled with nausea, fatigue, and weakness. I had to leave church early because I just wasn’t feeling good. I was pretty much in bed or on the couch most of the week. Tuesday I had an appointment to check all my blood counts. Then I met with my Doctor to go over them. He is really happy with how my White blood count was. They are definitely low, but not as low as he was expecting. He’s most concerned with my HGB level. This indicates I’m on the verge of becoming anemic which they obviously don’t want. He said they will test everything again when in come in for my next chemo on June 10th. If those numbers drop again. They’ll have to lower my dose of the chemo drugs. This will not affect the outcome of the chemotherapy or make me have to do it longer thank goodness! I get winded pretty easy and have to rest a lot so it will be interesting to see what those numbers are in a week and a half. I know what to expect with the next round and will for sure start taking the anti nausea medication sooner than I did.

Overall I am still so grateful with how well my body is holding up to all this chemotherapy. It’s not easy but I’m doing it! Thank you again for all the prayers and support!

Chemo #14 today! 2 to go!!

My blood counts all went up after my last blood draw. So we proceeded as normal today! They are still on the low side, but in a good range. So grateful my body is staying strong. Praying that continues!

I’m anxious about what this week will bring. But I’ve got a good game plan with the anti nausea medication and I’ll go get fluids on Wednesday and Friday this week to help give me a boost.
