It is that time of year again. The Starfish Fundraising Festival 6.0 is here.

This year has not been the easiest around the world, yet in the spirit of resilience and love, we have been working on a celebration that honors the light, color, and beauty that emerge when we come together across borders and generations to move our world toward shared progress.

Through this festival, we celebrate ten cultures represented by the incredible volunteers who have joined us from around the world, from Senegal to Mexico, Guatemala to Afghanistan. Each of them has left a unique imprint on our Starfish family, enriching our story with new rhythms, languages, and ways of serving humanity.

This year’s festival carries an even deeper meaning. We are also celebrating a man whose life has shown us that love in action can transform lives. Our beloved co-founder, Uncle David Fox, is turning fifty.

For over sixteen years, Uncle David has poured his heart into Starfish International, crossing continents to nurture thousands of girls in The Gambia toward education, leadership, and hope. His journey reminds us that when we choose to serve, we create ripples of change that outlive us. Look at what real partnership can create. Look at the good the world has gained because one man chose to love through service.

As we celebrate The Best of All Worlds, we also celebrate the living legacy of that love, our mentors.

Who the Mentors Are

Our mentors are the heartbeat of Starfish International. They are young women and men who once sat in the very classrooms they now teach in. They are Starfish alumni who have chosen not to walk away but to return home to give back, to guide, and to serve.

In 2013, Starfish International evolved from a summer school program into a year-round movement of service and leadership through our mentorship program. Each year, up to fifty Starfish alumni volunteer their time to mentor over two hundred students across The Gambia, leading classes in Science and Technology, Arts and Crafts, Health, Environmental Sustainability, Music and Dance, Media and Communication, and Leadership and Advocacy.

These mentors embody everything Starfish stands for: service, character, and leadership. They show what it means to build a better Gambia, one act of kindness at a time.

What They Do

Our mentors keep Starfish alive every single day. They:

Teach classes and provide free tutorials to students
Lead business and entrepreneurship sessions that help young people gain independence
Facilitate capacity-building lessons around the Sustainable Development Goals so that Starfish students grow not only in knowledge but also in purpose

Their dedication lights up the Starfish campus. They are the anchors of service, nurturing a generation that believes in giving back and leading with compassion. Through their mentoring, they are shaping the leaders The Gambia and the world need today, leaders who are empathetic, skilled, and rooted in community values.

Every year, Starfish hosts this festival to raise funds that support our mentors, the same young people who dedicate their time and energy to serve while pursuing their own education.
