I've been an avid support of hacker/makerspaces for over a decade, initially because they provided me with opportunities to learn how to use tools I wouldn't be able to afford.
Over the years I've had the opportunity to see the long term positive impact these spaces have.
They inspire confidence within first time tool users, that they can build something from scratch.
They save people time and money as they learn to repair things.
They reduce waste from the landfill - once you know how to use a few tools it's hard not to develop a new perspective on whether you toss it or save it.
They provide real economic opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and it's not uncommon for larger companies to utilize them (it's easier to get your boss to pay for your membership than it is to convince them they need to build a space of their own).
I'm fundraising to continue making it easy for people to access these spaces. The funds raised help fill the difference between what the shop charges, and what it costs to run it. Fortunately, that gap gets smaller and smaller every year as our membership grows.
Thanks!
