Who We Are

Since March 2022, the Long Island Immigration Clinic has been helping asylum seekers through our pro-se immigration clinic that meets every Wednesday evening. Through a volunteer-driven effort overseen by LIIC staff, we assist our Immigrant Friends complete their asylum application and related legal documents, as well as provide them with resources and referrals for housing, applying for a driver's license, health care, food security, and more. We provide a safe environment to our Friends where they feel welcome to return each week.

Challenges Faced by our Immigrant Friends

A significant barrier that our Immigrant Friends face is financial instability upon arrival to the United States. Many have spent everything they have just to make the journey to get here and are unable to afford representation from an attorney. Our Immigrant Friends struggle with access to the basic necessities of life such as transportation, food, clothing, and housing. Asylum seekers are not eligible for employment authorization until at least six months after they have applied for asylum and due to anti-immigrant regulations, some asylum seekers are never eligible while their application is pending. This fund will be critical for meeting these fundamental needs of asylum seekers until they are able to support themselves.

How You Can Help

It is our goal to be able to offer mutual aid to our Immigrant Friends when they come to the clinic and we need your help to make it happen! Beneficiaries of our funds would be able to use donations to meet a variety of needs including transportation, paying for groceries, contributing to their rent, purchasing clothing for their children, receiving medical care or counseling.
