The mission statement of Hillsdale College sets forth its resolve “to furnish all persons … a literary, scientific, [and] theological education…and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” The College has maintained its ability to adhere to this mission by a steadfast refusal to accept any governmental funding for “grants, student loans or scholarships”.

Although Hillsdale College is not a Catholic college (it is a “nonsectarian Christian institution”), many Catholic parents are eager to have their children benefit from the outstanding academic, civic and moral education provided by that school. In addition, a surprising number of non-Catholics who attend Hillsdale end up converting to the faith every year. Out of a student body of about 1,400 students, an average of 15 students convert every year. What accounts for this? Might it be that young people offered a rigorous and imaginatively rich experience of the good, the true and the beautiful are drawn to the Source of these good things?

Dr. Kenneth Calvert, Professor of History at Hillsdale College and himself a convert to Catholicism will speak on this topic at the Catholic Citizens of Illinois January Forum luncheon on Friday, January 9, 2026 at the Carlisle Banquet Hall in Lombard, Illinois beginning at 11:30. For our planning purposes, it is very helpful if reservations are made as far in advance as possible.

Catholic Citizens of Illinois is an Illinois not-for-profit organization founded in 1997 by Mary Anne Hackett and the late Thomas Roeser in response to the Second Vatican Council’s call for authentic lay involvement in the life of the Church and society. Our mission is to equip lay Catholics with the knowledge and formation needed to bring the Catholic faith and culture into the public square.

Through effective, non-partisan programs, we address American culture and public policy with unwavering fidelity to Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. We seek to enhance the Catholic laity’s understanding of their civic responsibilities -- advocating for religious liberty, the sanctity of life from conception to natural death, and the natural institution of marriage as a lifelong union between one man and one woman.

In keeping with the spirit of Lumen Gentium (§38), we encourage Catholics to be what the soul is to the body: a leaven in society, bearing spiritual fruit and bearing witness to Christ. To that end, we host monthly luncheons and an annual fundraising dinner featuring prominent speakers who address timely issues of concern to our membership and guests.
