UPDATE: April 17th, 2024

This weekend Ewul was finally able to return home.

She still needs to heal from the previous surgeries and continue to gain strength for another surgery within the next month. Being at home, with her daughter and having the loving company of the rest of the family is supporting her in her recovery. As she still needs to be monitored by the doctors, the family will take her to the hospital in the city next week. As you may remember Ewul has already gone through three surgeries.

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 27th 2024

Yesterday Ewul underwent her third surgery since being hospitalized last Saturday. She continues to be in unstable health. Ewul's husband has remained steadfast by her side throughout her treatment, with her family taking shifts to support her, while also caring for her 6 year old daughter.

We are so grateful to everyone who has given to our family so far to cover the costs of this traumatic experience. Unfortunately, given her unstable condition the costs will continue to grow, so every donation will help us get through this!

Cata, a longtime Providence community organizer, is fundraising for her sister-in-law Ewul’s medical costs, after she experienced birthing complications that lead to the loss of her baby and serious ongoing health complications for herself. Ewul lives in a rural indigenous community in Guatemala and her only option for emergency medical care is to seek treatment at an expensive private facility until she is stabilized. Ewul is expected to remain in the private hospital until next week, by that time her medical expenses are estimated to reach upwards of Q113,000 (about $15,000).

In the early hours of the morning on Saturday March 16th Ewul began to have contractions. It took nearly two hours to get from her home in a rural village to a private emergency medical center in a regional town. By the time she arrived at the private clinic it was too late. Ewul underwent an emergency c-section in the early morning but the baby had already passed on. With ongoing medical complications beyond the capacity of this clinic, her family had to call a private ambulance service to transport her 4 hours away to a larger private hospital where she underwent a second surgery. Several days later and she is currently at this private hospital receiving treatment and will stay here until she is stable.

Unfortunately, the public hospital system in Guatemala is not guaranteed to have adequate and specialized care in all situations. So at times families are forced to seek care from better resourced private institutions, where they know they will have access to adequate medical technology, medical supplies, staffing, space and sanitary conditions. The private hospital where Ewul is seeking care is also the only hospital that is in a central location that is accessible to Ewul and her family.

Ewul’s family mainly lives off the land through subsistence farming (enough to feed the family). They do not have much in the way of income/cash and are dependent on their extended family and network for support during this devastating time.

We are looking to raise $15,000 to cover Ewul’s emergency and ongoing medical care, including medicines and treatments. Funds raised will pay for:
- Emergency c-section at the private clinic
- Ambulance & transportation to the private hospital
- Second surgery at the private hospital
- Treatment at the private hospital

Any additional funds raised will go towards Ewul’s long-term care, any costs for accessing follow-up medical care including transportation and/or housing (depending on if she is discharged and needs to stay in the city near the hospital, or is able to commute 4-5 hours from her rural town to the hospital).

Este fin de semana Ewul finalmente ha podido regresar a su casa.

Necesita sanar las previas cirugías y continuar agarrando fuerza para otra cirugía más dentro del próximo mes. Estar en su casa, con su hija y el acompañamiento del resto de la familia está apoyándola en su recuperación. Como aún necesita chequeo de los doctores, la familia la llevará a ella al hospital en la ciudad la próxima semana. Como puedes recordar Ewul ya ha pasado por tres cirugías.

Gracias por su apoyo. Su ayuda adicional ayudará a la familia a seguir accediendo al cuidado médico dentro de un tiempo corto para disminuir el riesgo de vivir con complicaciones mientras junta el dinero necesario.

Ayer Ewul tuvo su tercera cirugía desde que fue hospitalizada el sábado pasado. Su estado de salud sigue siendo inestable. El marido de Ewul se ha mantenido firme a su lado durante todo el tratamiento, con su familia haciendo turnos para apoyarla, al mismo tiempo que cuida de su hija de 6 años.

Estamos muy agradecidos a todos los que han ayudado a nuestra familia a cubrir los gastos de esta traumática experiencia. Desgraciadamente, dada la inestabilidad de su estado, los costes seguirán aumentando, así que todas las donaciones nos ayudarán a superarlo.

Ayuda a una madre indígena rural a pagar los gastos médicos de urgencia tras un parto traumático donde perdió su bebe.

Cata, una organizadora comunitaria de Providence desde hace mucho tiempo, está recaudando fondos para cubrir los gastos médicos de su cuñada Ewul, después de que sufriera complicaciones en el parto que causaron la pérdida de su bebé y graves complicaciones de salud para ella misma. Ewul vive en una comunidad indígena rural de Guatemala y su única opción para recibir atención médica de urgencia es recibir tratamiento en un costoso centro privado hasta que se estabilice. Se estima que Ewul permanecerá ingresada en el hospital privado hasta la semana que viene, y se calcula que para entonces sus gastos médicos ascenderán a más de Q113.000 (unos 15.000 dólares estadounidenses).

En la madrugada del sábado 16 de marzo, Ewul empezó a tener contracciones. Tardó casi dos horas en llegar desde su casa en una aldea rural hasta un centro médico privado de urgencias en una ciudad de la región. Cuando llegó a la clínica privada ya era demasiado tarde. Ewul fue sometida a una cesárea de urgencia de madrugada, pero el bebé ya había fallecido. Las continuas complicaciones médicas superaron la capacidad de esta clínica, por lo que su familia tuvo que llamar a un servicio privado de ambulancias para que la trasladaron a 4 horas de distancia a un hospital privado más grande, donde la operaron por segunda vez. Varios días después, se encuentra en este hospital privado recibiendo tratamiento y permanecerá aquí hasta que se estabilice.

Por desgracia, el sistema hospitalario público de Guatemala no garantiza una atención adecuada y especializada en todas las situaciones. Por eso, a veces las familias se ven obligadas a buscar atención en instituciones privadas mejor equipadas, donde saben que tendrán acceso a tecnología médica adecuada, suministros médicos, personal, espacio y condiciones sanitarias. El hospital privado al que acude Ewul es también el único céntrico al que Ewul y su familia pueden acceder.

La familia de Ewul vive principalmente de la agricultura de subsistencia (suficiente para alimentar a la familia).
No tienen muchos ingresos ni dinero en efectivo y dependen de su familia extendida y de su red de apoyo en estos momentos trágicos.

Queremos recaudar 15.000 dólares para cubrir la atención médica de urgencia y continuada de Ewul, incluidos medicamentos y tratamientos. Los fondos recaudados servirán para pagar
- Cesárea de urgencia en la clínica privada
- Ambulancia y transporte al hospital privado
- Segunda intervención quirúrgica en el hospital privado
- Tratamiento en el hospital privado

Cualquier fondo adicional que se recaude se destinará a los cuidados a largo plazo de Ewul, a los costes de acceso a la atención médica de seguimiento, incluido el transporte y/o el alojamiento (dependiendo de si recibe el alta y necesita quedarse en la ciudad cerca del hospital, o de si puede viajar 4-5 horas desde su pueblo rural hasta el hospital).
