UPDATE on 6/21/2021:

Dear friends,

I am profoundly thankful to each and every one of you for the support and accompaniment you have shown me and my family. I was hoping to write an update with good news as my family and I were optimistic for the health of my dear father. Unfortunately, he transitioned to the ancestors on Tuesday June 15 in Omaha, Nebraska. My husband and I accompanied his final weeks in the hospital and were at his side at the moment of his transition.

A wake was held in Omaha, NE on Friday 6/18 will be followed by a Catholic Mass later. My father’s body will be sent to our home community, the village of Temux Grande in Santa Eulalia, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. If you wish, we will still be accepting donations to help cover the significant costs of repatriation as well as the funeral costs in both Omaha and Guatemala, for settling his estate, and assuring that my mother does not have to worry about money at this difficult time.

✨UPDATE: We reached our first goal in less than 48 hours! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, this community is amazing! We decided to increase the fundraiser an additional $3,000. This would be used to cover the cost of an additional month of care. Any extra funds will be used to cover medical costs while Pancho is hospitalized and during his recovery.

The Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance (AMOR) is fundraising for our amazing director, Cata, and her father Don Francisco (known as Pancho by his community). Pancho was recently hospitalized with COVID-19 and has been in intensive care since April 30th. Cata is Pancho’s only family member in the United States and holds the responsibility of coordinating his care and his bills.

As Director of AMOR, Cata has worked to build up the coalition to its current status by coordinating its financial administration, its support teams and so much more. Cata has given so much to all the communities she is a part of and now we want to show her some love back! Anything you can contribute is greatly appreciated. Please share this with your network!

Funds raised would go towards the following for the next 4 months we expect Pancho to be in recovery:

Housing: $1,200/month
Bills & Utilities (gas, electricity, phone, etc): $400/month
General Cost of Living (food, transportation, essential items, etc): $500/month

Total: $2,100/month = for 4 months $8,400

Travel costs so that Cata’s Mom can travel from Guatemala to take care of Pancho when he is released from the hospital: $1,200

More About Cata and Pancho

Pancho (age 60) lives on his own in Omaha, Nebraska, and much like Cata, is a passionate member of his community. Known as a leader that offers support to those around him, as a multi-instrumentalist he is also extremely passionate about teaching and playing music. Pancho works in construction and is motivated by his desire to provide for his family in Guatemala, doing what is necessary to feed them and move his family forward. Born in rural Guatemala Pancho has been living and working in the United States on his own since 1990. Part of his family lives in RI and the rest continue to live in Guatemala.

Around April 24th, Pancho was diagnosed with COVID-19, and as his only relative in the US, Cata did her best to support him from afar by ordering food while he was quarantined at home. His health rapidly declined over the course of the week, and by Friday April 30th Cata had to find a way to send an ambulance to his home and have him checked in at the hospital. He was immediately admitted into intensive care and he has been on a respirator ever since.

As his main contact of support in the United States, his daughter Cata is now responsible for ensuring her father is getting adequate medical care and paying his bills while he is no longer receiving income. She also keeps her family in Guatemala up-to-date with his condition on a daily basis through long distance phone calls that are paid for by the minute.

To start we are setting our goal at $10,000 with the hope that Pancho will recover during the next 4 months. Let’s support Cata through these difficult times!
