Camden Catholic Cross Country: Tradition, Teamwork, and Tenacity

The Camden Catholic boys and girls cross country programs embody the heart of Irish athletics — resilience, discipline, and unity. Competing across South Jersey’s toughest courses, our runners continue a proud legacy that includes conference and sectional success, historic rivalries, and individual accomplishments that inspire every new generation of Irish athletes.

A defining moment in program history came in 2007, when the boys team ended Paul VI’s remarkable 244-meet dual-meet winning streak — a victory that still echoes through the program’s culture of grit and determination. That same spirit is carried on by alumni like Kevin McDonnell ’08, a former All-American who broke school records, went on to earn NCAA honors at Saint Joseph’s University, and in 2024 became the first American in 30 years to win Philadelphia’s Broad Street Run. His journey from Camden Catholic trails to the national stage continues to motivate our runners today.

Behind the program’s success are two long-time coaches whose leadership defines Irish cross country. Coach Joe Murtin ’79, head of the girls team, has built a culture of steady progress and teamwork, guiding the program to its highest South Jersey ranking in nearly a decade and multiple invitational victories. On the boys’ side, Coach Dennis Quinn brings consistency, mentorship, and competitive drive, helping athletes grow in confidence and character both on and off the course.
