What is it?
- Dr.Kevin B. Jones, a CCS champion physician and scientist, is launching a project to investigate the co-factors that are important for EWSR1-ATF1 function in clear cell sarcoma. The fusion of EWSR1-ATF1 is the oncogenic driver in clear cell sarcoma. Currently surgery is the best option however distant metastases develop in about half of the patients leading to poor prognosis. Treatments and therapies are desperately needed. EWSR1-ATF1 has not proven to be easily targeted, therefore Dr. Jones is researching co-factors required for EWSR1-ATF1 function to target for future therapies.

How much does this cost?
- Dr.Jones has identified two prospective co-factors required for the function of EWSR1-ATF1 in clear cell sarcoma oncogenesis. He needs to obtain mouse models for both of these co-factors to use for this research. The mouse models have already been developed by a company and the cost to purchase them is approximately $20,000.

How will this help a CCS patient?
- If Dr. Jones is successful in showing a requirement of these co-factors in CCS oncogensis, there is potential for drugs to be identified or developed to target these molecules in CCS tumor cells and eventually be used as treatments or therapies. This phase of research is “discovery biology,” which means that there is a possibility that the study may not yield the expected results. However the knowledge generated in this study will lead to better understanding of the process by which EWSR1-ATF1 causes CCS and can help direct future research.

How long will this project last?
- Preliminary studies with the co-factor mouse models will likely be completed within the year, however more definitive studies will take longer.
