Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. Haitians of all ages continue to suffer with and die from a number of preventable water-borne diseases including cholera, typhoid and dysentery. There continues to be a significant need throughout Haiti for additional sources of safe water.
Chicago Friends of Haiti partners with Living Waters for the World which provides training for mission teams to bring clean water to third-world communities throughout the world. Goals include forming local partnerships to install a water treatment system and equipping local leaders to operate and maintain the water filtration system. The partnership emphasizes training local leaders to provide ongoing education on health and safe hygiene practices. Chicago Friends of Haiti already sponsors several clean water systems in cooperation with ESMI.
