Montavius's story is like that of so many others who struggle with substance and alcohol use disorder – sparked by a tragedy and marked by cycles of use and remission. For Montavius, the tragedy was the death of his beloved uncle when he was 12, and he worked over and over into his late twenties to overcome his addictions. Then came a realization during the pandemic: “I knew if I didn’t stop, I was going to die.”

Soon, Montavius entered Covenant Community’s residential treatment program, and though this was his second attempt with the program, this time it took. He credits the staff and volunteers for saving his life, and he was able to strengthen his relationship with God. He said, “I know God is real. I understand the reason I’m not dead is for me to help somebody else the way Covenant helped me.”

His mother, Katrina, also credits Covenant with this transformation. For years, she had cried and prayed for Montavius’s recovery, and she found the answer with Covenant: “Since he’s been at Covenant, he’s grown into the man he always talked about being.” She became so moved by Montavius’s recovery that she started working in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility herself.

Montavius is a true example of how, with the help of Covenant Community, men struggling with substance abuse disorder can change the trajectory of their lives.
