Chickens are where most people's relationship with farm animals begins. And for good reason.

They are accessible, they are active, and they are one of the most complete agricultural education tools available at any scale. Through our chicken flock program students learn the full cycle of poultry care including feeding, watering, egg collection, coop maintenance, and seasonal health monitoring. They also learn something more fundamental: what it actually takes to produce the food that ends up on a breakfast plate every morning.

For urban students especially, the disconnect between a grocery store egg and a living breathing chicken is almost total. Our flock closes that gap. Once you have collected an egg still warm from the nest and understood what went into producing it, you never look at food the same way again. That shift in perspective is exactly what we are here to create.

The chicken program also introduces students to the role poultry plays in a regenerative farm system. Chickens naturally fertilize the soil, control pests, and contribute to the overall health of the land they live on. We teach all of it.

How your donation will be used:
Funds go toward the purchase of the initial flock, chicken coop construction and fencing, feeders, waterers, nesting boxes and bedding, feed and veterinary supplies for the first year of operation, egg collection and processing equipment, and the development of a poultry curriculum that documents the full cycle from chick to egg so it can be replicated at every extension site in our network.

How it will be tracked and reported:
Flock health, egg production, and program enrollment are tracked weekly and reported quarterly. Donors receive updates with photos of the flock, egg production numbers, and stories from students who have worked directly with the chickens. We will document the first full production cycle as a replicable case study for our extension network. All purchases are reported with receipts in our quarterly financial summary.

Why this matters:
An egg is not a product. It is the result of care, attention, and a living system working the way it is supposed to. We teach that. And it starts with the chickens.
