In 2014, I was moving, mid way through the school year, half way around the world, from Zambia to Connecticut, with my two children. I could not get Frankie and Johnny into a single school with a high percentage of children of color, that was not under resourced.
We should not live in a state where poverty concentration undermines educational opportunities. We should not live in a state where school systems are overburdened and under resourced. We should not live in a state where kids of color are left behind, because of inadequate funding structures, a lack of housing choice, and poverty concentration.
Our children deserve better. Open Communities Alliance works to ensure that all families have a choice in where they live and where their children go to school. We fight to dismantle restrictive zoning practices, which have created extreme segregation in our state. At the same time, we invest in economically challenged communities, improving outcomes for all kids. For my kids, and for all kids, please donate today to OCA!
