This fall at Loyola Academy, one of our Cinematic Healing students—we’ll call him Jamal—was quietly fighting a battle no 13-year-old should face.

His family was hit hard when the government shutdown happened.

His mother, a federal employee, was suddenly laid off and still required to work without pay. Bills piled up. Food stretched thin. Eviction notices began showing up on the door.

Kids began whispering.
His worn shoes.
His skipped lunches.
His sister crying after someone said, “Y’all broke… you’re not getting anything for Christmas.”

Jamal didn’t fight back.
He just shut down.

That same afternoon, he walked into our Cinematic Healing session.

Our instructor noticed the numbness immediately and led the boys through a powerful moment of emotional awareness, empathy, and accountability. For the first time that day, Jamal breathed again. His shoulders dropped. The room softened.

But the pain didn’t magically disappear.
The shutdown didn’t end.
The eviction notice didn’t go away.

And the truth is—many of our boys are carrying adult-sized stress in adolescent bodies.
