A Photo Book Project

Years ago, I envisioned a photography series that would showcase men of color in a new light—immersed in milk and adorned with flowers. This concept was born from a desire to challenge the harsh stereotypes often placed upon them—labels of violence, trouble, and insignificance. Instead, I wanted to elevate their image, revealing their depth, strength, and humanity. The milk symbolizes softness and healing, a cleansing contrast to the weight of societal judgments. The flowers, with their delicate petals, represent vulnerability—a reminder that strength and sensitivity can coexist beautifully. Through this series, I aim to reshape the narrative, celebrating the grace, resilience, and complexity of these men.

The images shown on www.carollara.com/book-project were as far as I got. When I realized how expensive publishing a photo book would be, I wasn’t sure how to move forward, so I put the project on hold. Lately, I’ve been revisiting my past work for inspiration, and this project keeps resurfacing in my mind. I’m torn—part of me wants to continue, even though I have no idea how I’d fund the book. I keep reminding myself of the phrase, “Build it, and they will come,” but I’m not sure if that will hold true.

I'm sharing this here for anyone who may be interested in contributing. Any donations will go towards covering the costs of the equipment needed for these photo shoots (such as pools, milk, and flowers), the significant expenses of publishing a photobook, advertising and social media promotion and the time I'll need to invest in research, shooting, editing, and creating the book—time that would otherwise go towards other income-generating projects. Your support means the world to me, and I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!
