Far too often, families and seniors are forced to choose between buying groceries or paying for rent, medicine, utilities, or other essential bills.

Yet even in the midst of hardship, something remarkable happens. Research shows that 41% of Americans who have experienced food insecurity go on to volunteer and serve others. This powerful truth reveals something profound about the human spirit — and it lies at the very heart of why Community Hands exists.

We believe that when people are met with compassion during their time of need, many respond by becoming givers themselves. This beautiful cycle — receiving help today and paying it forward tomorrow — is not just inspiring. It is transformative. It strengthens families, builds stronger communities, and reflects the very best of who we are as a people.

The Heart of Our Mission

Community Hands is a community of servant leaders who believe in America and the American dream — the belief that with hard work, opportunity, and support, people can build better lives for themselves and their families. We are called to be servant leaders, walking in the footsteps of Christ. By stewarding our God-given time, talents, and treasure, we live out our purpose in Him — loving one another as He has loved us (John 13:34).

A significant and growing number of the people we serve are first-generation immigrants — new Americans who have come to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their children. They bring with them a deep desire to work hard, contribute, and build something meaningful. They are part of the ongoing story of America — a nation built by generations of immigrants who embraced its values of hard work, self-reliance, and the pursuit of a better future.

We believe American culture is inherently special. It is centered around a “can-do” attitude, personal responsibility, and the guiding principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These values have made America the most generous nation on earth — a place where people of all backgrounds have the opportunity to rise.

At Community Hands, we see it as part of our mission to welcome our new American neighbors, help them build a sturdy foundation, and encourage them to adopt the best of American values and culture. Our goal is to walk alongside them so they can rise with dignity and become servant leaders who pay it forward — strengthening their families, their communities, and ultimately, our nation.

Our Story

For nearly twenty years, Community Hands has faithfully served our neighbors in Southeast Michigan. What began as a small food pantry operated entirely by dedicated volunteers from Community Christian Church has grown into one of the largest emergency food pantries in the region. Today, we serve thousands of families each month and distribute millions of pounds of nutritious food and groceries every year.

We operate with deep respect for the dignity of every person who walks through our doors. The church has been an extraordinary and faithful partner, generously covering the cost of food (approximately $55,000 annually), providing our current facility and utilities, and supporting operations with staff and resources. We are deeply grateful for this foundation of faith and generosity.

In 2026, we established Community Hands, Inc. as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This step allows us to expand our reach, welcome new partners and donors, and pursue greater long-term impact while remaining closely connected to our church roots.

The Deeper Need

Emergency food assistance meets an immediate and urgent need — and we will never stop doing that work with excellence. However, we also recognize that true compassion must go further. Many of the people we serve don’t just need a meal for today. They need hope, stability, skills, encouragement, and a pathway toward a better tomorrow.

When someone is struggling with hunger and instability, their God-given potential is limited. This is especially true for new Americans who are working hard to establish themselves in a new country while navigating language barriers, cultural differences, and economic challenges.

By providing both immediate relief and long-term support, we can help break cycles of hardship and create a ripple effect of generosity and service throughout our community.

Our Bold Vision: Community Hands 2.0

We are raising funds to transform our current food pantry into a full Community Care Center through a major expansion and renovation of our existing facility on church property.

This new center will go far beyond food distribution. We will provide holistic care that addresses the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. Our expanded facility will include modern systems, improved technology, and dedicated spaces for life skills training, mentorship, and personalized support.

Our ultimate goal is to help individuals and families — including many new Americans — build a strong foundation so they can rise with dignity and become servant leaders who pay it forward in their communities and beyond.
