COYOTE was founded in 2025 by longtime journalists in the Bay Area. We’re reporters and podcasters, filmmakers and photographers, opinion and advice columnists. Inspired by the alt-weeklies of yore and tired of corporate newsrooms dominating the narrative, we envisioned an outlet where we’d have the freedom to pursue stories that reflect the complexity and depth of the region we know and love. We serve curious, discerning readers who want to feel more connected to their communities, and who crave a fresh approach to the news. 

We call ourselves COYOTE in homage to the Pomo trickster god, the native Bay Area animal, and the 1970s sex worker rights group by the same name. In a nod to their legacy, we invite you to Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics.
