Cross-Country Bike Ride for Health
This is the donation page for the second stop of Lachlan Kirby's Cross-Country For Community Care bike ride, now headed to the Frontera Federation headquarters in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Eagle Pass is located in a unique area of Texas, right on the Rio Grande, where border crossings are common, resources are scarce, and loss of life is not unusual. Faced with a lack of support from formal institutions, Frontera Federation revitalizes border communities and emphasizes community involvement and care over militarization. They are at the forefront of community healthcare access in South Texas, providing a service called Salud Sin Miedo---Health Without Fear---a one-year pilot program that brings healthcare to community members where they are, staffed by volunteer medical care providers, health researchers, and attorneys. They are working tirelessly to launch and expand this program to other border regions in the United States and provide free medical care to families who need it.
Frontera Federation also runs numerous other initiatives, such as their monthly Border Vigil, a community group that meets in remembrance of the needless loss of life in the borderlands, and Diabetes Platicas, a program designed to bridge the knowledge gap that diabetes patients are often left with after receiving medical care. They also provide community members beyond Eagle Pass with the tools they need to advocate for their rights and serve their communities, and are grounded in the belief that care provided for communities, by communities, is often where meaningful change begins.
As a grassroots organization, Frontera Federation relies on every dollar donated to support its vital work for its community in the face of institutional shortcomings. Your donation will go toward operational costs, medical supplies, community workshops, and more!
Your support is incredibly appreciated by Frontera Federation's primarily-volunteer staff and the border communities we serve. Thank you so much for your commitment to community care!
As part of Cross-Country for Community Care, Lachlan will investigate how communities respond when formal systems of care are inaccessible by volunteering for three different non-profits in different communities across the Southern United States.
