Our Story: From Invisibility to Impact

For generations, Black women, and particularly those who are plus-size, have been told that their bodies are "too much," yet they remain simultaneously invisible in health research, media representation, and leadership spaces. In the U.S. South, this paradox is even more personal: Black women face the highest levels of body-based stigma and health inequity in the nation. Despite over 70% of Black women identifying as plus-size, they represent less than 8% of mainstream beauty and wellness campaigns.

The DESIRE+ Collective was born out of both research and lived experience to replace shame with self-acceptance and marginalization with leadership. Founded by Nijeria Jones, a licensed counselor, sexologist, and Ms. Voluptuous America 2025/2026, we are moving beyond survival toward wholeness, wellness, and joy.
