Heartworm disease is in all 50 states in the US. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos and a single bite from an infected mosquito can transmit heartworms to a dog. If the dog is on heartworm prevention it will kill the baby heartworms that are transmitted. It is when the dog is not on prevention that the problem begins. Once these worms have entered the dogs system it takes about 6 months for them to reach sexually mature adult heartworms. These worms live in the lungs and the heart of the dog. The life span of these worms can be 5-7 years. Every mosquito that takes a blood meal from an infected dog can go on to infect another dog.

Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen. Dogs with large numbers of heartworms can develop a sudden blockages of blood flow within the heart leading to a life-threatening form of cardiovascular collapse.

Heartworm disease is a serious, progressive disease. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances the pet will recover. There are few, if any, early signs of disease when a dog is infected with heartworms, so detecting their presence with a heartworm test administered by a veterinarian is important. The test requires just a small blood sample from your pet, and it works by detecting the presence of heartworm proteins.

Foster Pet Outreach is a local non-profit organization, 501(c)(3), whose main focus is to help provide for the well being of animals in our community. We have been doing this since 1991.

We believe that abandoned, injured, or neglected animals deserve the same care and concern, as do our own companion animals. Our members feel that they have the responsibility to address the general needs of this community's animals and to champion the rights of those worthwhile beings with whom we share our world.

Foster Pet Outreach seeks to educate the community in the topics of pet over-population and the necessity of responsible pet ownership. We also bring to local attention the plight of animals who have been denied the basic necessities for a quality life. Animals have an intrinsic value, which is greatly beyond their commercial significance.
